Green Signal, Deccan Gymkhana, Pune: Decor
Green Signal is housed in a beautiful bungalow on Apte Road The old, stone property has been thoughtfully converted into a fully functional restaurant. The most impressive feature is the sprawling garden, with naturally growing trees and plants adding to the charm of the place. The seating throughout the space is comfortable. The outdoor section has a mix of seating arrangements ranging from wooden benches to private gazebos. While the outdoor section has mostly patio furniture, the indoor section has elegant and comfortable wooden chairs. Valet parking is available which was frankly a big plus as finding a suitable parking spot on Apte Road is a rarity.
Green Signal, Deccan Gymkhana, Pune: Food
Green Signal had been on my must-visit restaurants for some time. With a few friends in tow, I visited Green Signal this week for a weekday brunch. Even on a Tuesday afternoon, the place was packed with people ranging from senior citizen groups to college students. We started with fresh orange and watermelon juices served nicely in bottles. Along with the juices we got a nachani masala papad which was quite tasty. This was a regular masala papad where the urad papad is substituted with a fluffy, crunchy nachani papad. Among appetizers, we started with the corn karari tikki. The tikkis were made purely with grated sweet corn and deep fried. This one is highly recommended. They had a special momos menu displayed on the table. We picked the less adventurous yet classic, veg momos. The momos were fine, nothing great. On our server’s recommendation, we also got the green signal exotica pizza which was made fresh in the wood-fired pizza oven placed in the outdoor section. The pizza was thin and tasty. Wish they had refrained from using red chilli powder in the sauce. The menu at Green Signal is quite elaborate with Indian, Maharashtrian and panAsian dishes. For mains, we chose to go Maharashtrian.
Their curries, made specially with homeground kaala masala are popular. The shevga curry (drumsticks) and the shev bhaaji were flavourful and rightly spicy. The shev bhaaji was slightly different from what I have eaten before. But it was delicious nonetheless. Probably the best of the lot was the methi pithla.
The consistency, the spice levels and the generous use of methi just worked. We paired our mains with piping hot jowar bhakris. To balance the spice, we also tried the shrikhand puri which was great. Very few restaurants have falooda on their menus. We gave into the temptation and ordered the incredible royal falooda. Always a great way to end the meal.
Plus & Minus:
Since it started, Green Signal has been a popular choice among vegetarians. The elaborate menu can get slightly confusing with Maharashtrian and Thai dishes placed next to each other. Overall the food was good barring a few dishes which were strictly average. But if you stick to their favorites and popular dishes, you’ll enjoy the food. I will be going back to try their breakfast dishes.
