Gossip Fusion Bistro, Kanathur, Chennai: Decor

With every major Indian or international festival, Gossip’s decor changes. This time, at the beginning of the year, it’s all about Christmas and the New Year. Otherwise, the interiors are a study in bright blue, yellow, black and splashes of colour — several elements contribute to make this restaurant memorable. On normal days, you will notice this place has gear wheels on its ceiling.

Food:

Starting with the intriguing Karuvapilai Arancini Mushroom Soup. Steaming hot mushroom soup is poured over an arancini ball in a bowl. The aroma rises, bringing the earthiness of the mushroom broth. I thoroughly enjoy the flavours of the soup’s cream, cheddar cheese and karuvapilai in the arancini along with pieces of mushroom in the soup.

Bhutanese in origin, the AJ Salad is a burst of health on a rectangular platter. Turns out to be almost like a complete meal, because of the various elements that go into the salad, including chicken breast, cheese, bell peppers, lettuce and citrus. Sweet, salty, tang and spicy flavours come from burnt red chillies, lemon juice, orange juice, honey and salt. Going with the Bhutanese flow, there’s the Winter Stew. It has fragrant rice brought in from Shillong. And there’s chicken, coconut milk, Chinese cabbage, leek and cheese. Bird’s eye chilli adds a hint of fire. It’s completely satisfying.

Spicy Tawa Fish Fry is a whole pomfret fish cooked with south Indian and Sri Lankan spices and coconut milk in a banana leaf. The fish is fresh and has retained its moist texture. Leaping straight to Goa, there’s Portuguese Sausage Curry with Buttered Poi Bread. Besides chicken sausages, it has loads of veggies and a discernible glimpse of cinnamon in the gravy.

Dessert = Cheese Fruit Cake. Get it before it’s gone. It comes topped by a thick layer of heady minced dry fruits and nuts that have been soaking for one whole year in rum!

Plus & Minus:

The menu here is very creative with several vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. However, they could do with a little less cheese in the veg section, and offer dedicated sections for vegan and gluten-free food.
