Joining the roster of new restaurants and bars in Ishanya Mall, Yerwada is this spunky dhaba styled eatery that dishes out some mean Punjabi grub and tipple at prices that can put a theka to shame.

An ode to the vibrant and loud dhabas that dot the northern state of Punjab, there is plenty of kitsch and colour here (a number plates with quirky messages, horns, charpoy ceiling art, faux mud walls). The outdoor seating with webbed vinyl chairs is a great spot to nurse a drink or two and the inside setup with plush chairs is more family-friendly. The music mostly comprising of vintage Bollywood and popular Punjabi numbers is upbeat.

You’re started off with a basket of papad, gratis. And if you don’t mind some DIY, you’re given a tray of ingredients with a mortar and pestle to make your own chutney. While the restaurant menu is pretty straightforward with a good selection of Punjabi and Mughlai preparations; the bar is more experimental, especially the signature cocktails-most of which are a spin on some popular concoctions. Masala papad lovers will find solace in the Amritsari Original Special Papad. Thicker than the urad-papad, three papads are stacked with fiery onion-tomato salsa on each layer. A good starter to pair your drinks with. Do try the Nazar Na Lagey, a wonderful play on the nimboo-mirchi charm. The chicken is marinated with lemon pickle and chilli paste and the succulent meat is wrapped around a sole chilli and finished off in the tandoor. While the kebab is subtly spiced, do watch out for the chilli that will sneak up on you with a punch of heat. Much more easy on the palette is the shallow-fried Kasoori Aloo Mattar Ki Tikki, roundels of potato mash and peas served with a tomato chutney. The Dahi Ke Kebab, compared to the other starters we tried was pretty lackluster. Though mutton and chicken dishes are the main guys at play here in non-vegetarian options, there are a few seafood inclusions as well. The Tawawale Tandoori Prawns, tiger prawns coated with red tandoori masala and shallow fried won’t disappoint, and if you want something more substantial, they also do a decent tandoor pomfret. Their mains’ selection is equally elaborate with plenty of paneer, veg, chicken and mutton options. Do try the trusty Butter Chicken. Devoid of any sweetness, this creamy tomato-based dish is comforting. For something more robust, the Amritsari Meat Masala, chunks of mutton on the bone cooked in a brown, thick gravy is a delicious bet.

Good News Dhaba is indeed good news for those who want to go out and have some familiar dishes in a fun setting. The service is warm and obliging. The signature cocktails are just about alright and their happy hours bar rates are good value for money.
