Fresh Off the Boat, located at the crowded Paud Phata is the new seafood kid on the block. With some heavy competition in the seafood category, can FOTB stand out from the crowd?
Fresh Off The Boat, Erandwane, Pune: Decor
The decor and the seating are fairly basic. The addition of exposed filament bulbs suspended from thick ropes gives a modern look to the otherwise conventional setting. Some embellishments on the walls and some themed decorations would have helped with creating the look for the restaurant.
Fresh Off The Boat, Erandwane, Pune: Food
Fresh Off the Boat promises to serve food using the freshest catch of the day. And they do deliver. They have a special section in the menu dedicated to different fish recipes cooked in Konkani or Goan style. Among this, the stuffed masala pomfret and the prawns rawa fry are our top picks.
Coming to the best section on the menu – the fish thalis. The thali consists of a choice of fried fish (surmai, pomfret, prawns, bangda or bombil) along with a prawns curry, served with chapatis, rice, koshmibir (salad) and solkadhi. If you want to take the safer route, choose from among the pomfret or the prawn version of the thali. But we highly recommend the bombil thali. The bombil fry was perfectly fresh, crispy and melt-in-your-mouth tasty. The prawns curry served with the fried fish was perfectly spiced and reminiscent of the curries one gets by the Konkan coast. We recommend that you ask for Indrayani rice (a fragrant and local variety of rice) instead of the regular basmati rice. This choice will definitely elevate your experience of the thali. The sol-kadhi was the perfect balance of tang from the kokam and the freshness from the coconut milk.
The menu also offers a Chinese and North Indian selection of dishes using different fish and prawns. From this, we would recommend the spicy prawn sizzler. Batter fried large prawns tossed in a hot garlic sauce served with prawns and egg fried rice, steamed veggies and French fries. This is a meal in itself. Beyond the menu, they also have a board which lists the day’s specials like crab and lobster fry, roast and curries. Keep a look out for that.
Fresh Off The Boat, Erandwane, Pune: Plus & Minus
Fresh Off The Boat (FOTB) with its diverse menu is definitely up there with some of the best seafood restaurants in the city. The ventilation for the restaurant needs to be better, as the smell of the catch overpowers the dining experience sometimes.
