Go. You must. It’s unique. It’s quirky fun. It’s inexpensive, too. Kya formula hai! 14 permanently popped up restaurants (some of young food entrepreneurs) in a sprawling, colorful, cacophonic room where you can eat, shop, booze.
Flea Bazaar Cafe, Lower Parel, Mumbai: Decor
Wham! Your senses are flooded, bombarded, submerged. Fairy lights. 3D ceilings. Plants. Exposed beams. Plug points. Exposed brick walls. 7,000 sq ft space has 14 food brands, a community bar and a shop that are thematically dressed up. A colorful van, too.
Flea Bazaar Cafe, Lower Parel, Mumbai: Food
Appam to dim sum, Panki to Pizza, kebabs to single origin coffees here. Getting Lucknow’s Tunday Kababiya here is a coup. Munaf’s Bohri Kitchen to dosas and more vie for your attention from their stalls. A joyous whoop for the innova tive Supera ppam Kejriwal. All Willingdon Club members (my dinner companions) tripped out on the melty, cheesy, egg cheekily and deliciously plonked in an appam. Holding it up is Abha Charanjiva, former regional head of an international travel house, a strong supporter of the superb new art and retail Kulture shop. We unanimously love Wattsappam, Chef Deepu’s Kerala stews and curries. Lucknowee’s dreamy creamy kebabs, fragrant biryanis meet with full approval of the great gourmet, oil industry veteran, from the Royal Nawanagar cricketing legend Ranji family Rajkumar Sukhdevsinhji, who cooks brilliantly, too. As does his wife Vijaylakshmi Sukhdevsinhji, princess from Masuda, Bridge champion, BSPCA fundraiser who gives us her vegetarian take: Soam’s chaat, handkerchief thin Panki and dosas are delicious as is the healthy Jawar Pita Pocket. Former multinational corporate chief and ace golfer Vijay Gokhale enjoys Goila’s Butter Chicken though some feel it could do with more of the kasoori methi. Bohri Kitchen’s Russian cutlet, the desserts — Caramel Custard and Coconut Appam, filter kapi ice cream are worth trying. As are the craft cocktails, craft beers and the freshly roasted on-premise coffees.
Flea Bazaar Cafe, Lower Parel, Mumbai: Minus Points
We all agreed that the dim sum and sushi were dry and best avoided. And the Super Pao’s Ghee Roast Chicken and Black Bhajji Pao mushy.Okayish Pizzas. Noisy. No salads. Many a dish (eg Bohri Biryani) not available. No bookings. Can be a pain to run around paying at each stall, but can request for one bill or pay on the app too.
Flea Bazaar Cafe, Lower Parel, Mumbai: My Point
Nayi release. Superhit plot! Chatpatta. A bit of everything. Set to foot-tapping music. Cheap booze and Lucknow se Tunday kebab, Kerala se Appam, Bohri travelling thaal, Soam ki paanki aur chaat. Goila ka butter chicken… Comfort-soaked, inexpensively priced khaana peena. Chinese and Japanese not as good as the rest. Open through the day, high-octane, noisy. Not for the aging epicures, but for the young and young at heart (like us). Game-changer Riyaaz Amlani (Social, Slink & Bardot) strikes again. Hits bulls eye.
