Fish Factory-Citrus Hotel, Cunningham Road, Bangalore: DECOR
Fish Factory at the Citrus Hotel is located right off Cunningham Road. Despite the rush of traffic outside, there’s been an effort to create a quiet outdoor air with a vertical garden and flooring that mimics grass. At one end is a seafood display where you choose fish, prawn, crab or lobster, priced by the gram and have it cooked to your preference. Given that the place is positioned as a seafood market, the table setting appeared to me somewhat incongruous, with their starched formality and heavy line-up of cutlery and wine glasses. A rustic or casual approach would surely have done more for the dining experience here.
Fish Factory-Citrus Hotel, Cunningham Road, Bangalore: FOOD
The fish and shellfish on offer are all fresh and i was invited to come and take my pick, choose marinades and sauces and specify how i wanted it done. The meal began with a small serving of lobster bisque, which was unremarkable. The Fish Factory makes an effort to turn the meal into an interactive experience and the food is cooked in a tableside trolley. Diners are invited to participate if they like.
I had first some prawns grilled in their shell and tossed in a peri-peri sauce. The prawns were fresh and sweet and paired nicely with the sauce. My dinner companion ordered Scampi in Garlic Butter. The seafood was moist and tender, but was disappointingly under-seasoned and lacked the oomph that lashings of garlic butter should have lent it.
The Rava Fried Kane or ladyfish i asked for was the highlight of the Fish Factory meal for me. The marination was perfect and the fish fried just right. There was a Samak Harra. While the pomfret was well-cooked and the sauce with its Middle Eastern origins was quite tasty, this didn’t come together too well. The Prawn Curry and Rice, with which I ended my meal, was home-style and we thoroughly enjoyed the comfort of it. For dessert, I tasted the Tiramisu, which was a poor attempt at a classic. The Crepes Suzette flambeed at the table were, in contrast, delicious, and I polished it off happily.
