Following a craving for Mughlai food, I visited Farmaaish in Baner on a friend’s recommendation. Farmaaish has been in operation since 2015 and it is one of the most popular restaurants in the area for North Indian and Mughlai food.

Farmaaish, Baner, Pune: Decor

Farmaaish is strategically located right on the main Baner road. They have a reserved parking area in an adjoining gated open space which is very convenient. The space is cosy, but they have utilized it practically to fit in different seating areas. As you enter there is an outdoor section overlooking the main road. Any traffic noise from the road is minimized by the number of trees and planters. The indoor section is well decorated and the seating is comfortable. It’s a mix of wooden chairs and sofas. The glass wall panels with sheer curtains ensure natural light lights up the space. The cutlery, plates and glasses are of steel and copper which adds to the North Indian theme.

Farmaaish, Baner, Pune: Food

Farmaaish serves Mughlai and North Indian cuisine. It is great to see a balanced ratio of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes on the menu. We started with hearty and delicious khumb makai shorba, a mushroom and corn soup layered with pepper, coriander and cream. A ritual at desi restaurants is the masala papad. Here it was rather disappointing with very less onions and tomatoes and an extra topping of sev. The kebabs section called tandoor-e-khaas is divided into vegetarian, murg, gosht and fish sections and each has a baffling variety. We got three grilled appetizers. Chhote nawab had baby potatoes marinated with tamarind, chilli, garlic and herbs and grilled in a tandoor. The char on the potatoes was perfect and they were cooked well. The asal murg Nizami tikka, a signature dish here was one of the best dishes we tried. The chicken was succulent and tender. The spices were subtle and the marination was spoton. For mahi re mahi (grilled pomfret) our server asked us the choice of marination and we picked the green or coriander-mint marinade. A medium size pomfret was served which was grilled with a tasty green marinade. All three kebabs along with the soup are highly recommended. Like the appetizers, the mains section also has a wide variety of dishes. The Punjabi stuffed dum aloo was delicious. Potatoes were stuffed with a paneer filling and cooked in a mild gravy. The methi mutter malai, which is a personal favourite, was excellent. The non vegetarians in our group got the bhuna gosht which is one of the most popular dishes here. On-the-bone mutton pieces were cooked in heavily caramelized onion and tomato gravy. A special mention of the ajwaini laccha paratha, the accompaniment to our mains. It was constructed perfectly and roasted in a tandoor which was evident with the slightly burnt corners. Even after we had polished off the curries with the parathas, we got another round and enjoyed them with a sprinkling of chaat masala. No north Indian meal is complete without a glass of lassi. Both the plain sweet lassi and the mango lassi were very good.

Plus & Minus:

The consistency in taste for the past seven years is a major plus for Farmaaish. The food was very good and we particularly enjoyed the kebabs. The staff was courteous and the service was prompt. The indoor section gets crowded during meal times and the whole restaurant is packed on weekends. With the small space, it tends to get slightly congested particularly when the restaurant is in full service.
