Starting a home baking business and seeing it grow into a brand with multiple outlets in the city is every baker’s dream. After some years of home baking, housewife-turned-chef, Nehaa Ahmed was joined by business partner Vinayak Sanas and they launched Fantasy Bakery ‘N’ Patisserie, which specialises in breads, celebration cakes, desserts and savouries. started baking as a hobby. Today, Fantasy has 5 outlets in the city Wanowrie, Bavdhan, Wakad, Aundh and Kothrud. This week, I visited the Wanowrie store which also doubles up as a cute cafe.
Fantasy Bakery ‘N’ Patisserie, Wanowrie, Pune: Decor
It is located on the Green Valley Road in Wanowrie. The store’s display has neon signs for desserts and celebration cakes which grab your attention instantly. The cutely designed unicorn logo and the use of bright colours throughout the store are sure to attract kids and youngsters. Inside, you have product posters and a small seating area with comfortable chairs and small tables. The dessert and cake display counter is filled with cupcakes, desserts, and cakes. A separate counter is dedicated to savouries and freshly baked bread. The vibe and ambience of the outlet is very welcoming and friendly.
Food:
Fantasy specialises in customised cakes, breads and an array of different desserts. On display at each store is a variety of cupcakes, cake pops, cheesecakes, and pastries along with baked savouries like pies, croissants and puffs. On a friend’s recommendation, who couldn’t stop raving about their puffs, we first tried the chicken puff and the Bombay masala puff. Both puffs were delicious. They were flaky and the use of good quality ingredients was evident. The chicken filling was flavourful and my personal favourite. The Bombay masala filling was equally good. We followed the puffs with butter and chocolate croissants. The croissants were rather large, but the layers were perfect. The butter croissant was a delight. The chocolate one was good, but for the large size of the croissant, the chocolate filling was slightly less. A square puff, the typical pain au chocolat shape would have been perfect for this. Among the five outlets, only the Wanowrie outlet has a small cafe menu which includes pasta, panini and Maggie. We got the vegetable pink pasta which was quite tasty. The chicken panini was delicious. It was grilled and the bread used was fresh. It makes such a huge difference when restaurants make sandwiches using bread baked in-house. Among desserts, their newly launched Biscoff cheesecake was my personal favourite. The opera pastry was slightly dry but the flavours were spot on. I also packed a bunch of vegetable puffs to go which were flaky, buttery and delicious.
Plus & Minus:
Barring a few, most of their cakes and desserts are eggless. Some ‘with egg’ options would have been great, particularly for people like me, who prefer cakes with eggs. The pasta and panini we tried were great and so were the croissants. A special mention of the puffs which were the best of the lot. I cannot wait to try their cakes and other savouries.
