Glass doors slide open like a movie screen and I walk into simple sophistication in the darkest brown and white, thinking ‘sweet white and dark chocolate’. Low seating, single sofas, high tables and chairs invite me to take my pick. I even like the tilted glasses they serve water in. Ten years of Ecstasy and the place remains as pristine as it was on Day One. Colour comes from the pastries. Each perfectly formed wonder leaves me wondering how Chef Mickael Besse calls the shots despite the distance. “The team is professional and follows my recipes exactly,“ he says. You could ask for a menu or you could go see for yourself and decide what captures your interest.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary, Besse has come up with several ideas, but the one that really appealed to me is the idea of Smoked Vanilla. Dark and different, yet familiar, it is a link between the third largest producer of vanilla in the world (India) and France, the land the chef belongs to. Topped with white chocolate crumble and whipped vanilla cream, with the slightly tangy, slightly sweet fruit jelly surrounding them, there is texture in every bite. The trick is to eat it all together to get the whole experience in one bite. That smokiness? It happens in the end.Since the place uses only Valrhona chocolate, you will notice the difference the moment you take a bite of the Double Layer Flak. It has the mystique in its two layers: one milk chocolate and the other, a dark delight. Both equally creamy, they take chocolate to the exotic level any discerning taste buds will recognize when had together. The Blind Date is meant for those who love surprises. Welcome surprises. Blind Date is not on display. The only facts you will know about it are: it is a traditional French Pastry crafted by Besse, one of the ingredients is Valrhona chocolate and whether it has eggs or not.

Interestingly, this pastry is themed around Sathyam’s Thursday shows called Blind Date. I truly enjoyed my Blind Date of the eating kind.
