Happy New Year! Here’s wishing you all good health and peace in 2022. For the first review of the new year, I have picked an old restaurant, one of my favourite watering holes.
Dublin: ITC Windsor, Bangalore – Decor
Dublin fits perfectly into ITC Windsor, the hotel with its vintage era-inspired charm. You enter from the lobby and it’s a step back in time. Deep leather chairs afford comfortable seating, while mellow lighting and music that still allows conversation set the mood at this Irish pub-inspired space.
Amidst all the hipster gastro pubs, the heavily themed bars and micro-breweries vying for ‘largest’ tag, Dublin is cosy, welcoming and old fashioned in a good way. Our lives have become so complicated these past two years, it’s refreshing to be able to relax in a place that makes no demands on you and doesn’t cry out for you to pay attention to its clever design.
In the tradition of the ITC hotels, there’s an excellent list of beers, wines and spirits here. If you are in the mood for cocktails, tell the bar-tender your preferences and he’ll shake up something special.
Dublin: ITC Windsor, Bangalore – Food
There are lots of good things to eat, too, whether you want a Classic Club Sandwich – chicken salad, smoked bacon, fried egg and Emmental – with a pint of beer for lunch or order a Pinot Grigio on your night out, grazing through some snacks and tucking into an Irish Stew or Fish ‘n’ Chips to wrap up the evening.
I’m not a particular fan of nachos, but the signature platter here, topped with bacon, tomato salsa, olives, sour cream and guacamole, acquiring heat from the chipotle sauce and jalapenos, is just the thing to accompany a pitcher of draught beer. And there’s the Kung Pao Cauliflower, a posh Gobi Manchurian, tossed in plum sauce and crunchy with peanuts. The Buffalo Wings in a barbecue sauce has many fans, too.
For the main course, my top choice at Dublin is the ultimate pub grub, a well-made Shepherd’s Pie, the mince, scented with rosemary combining with decadent mashed potato to provide the delicious comfort one needs from time to time. On other occasions, it may be a dry martini and the elegant cheese platter. Whatever the mood, Dublin can be counted upon to deliver.
