Dhaba 7, Sector 7, Chandigarh: About
Other than the name¬–it was earlier called Dhaba Estd 1986 Delhi– little has changed in this proudly Panjabi restaurant in Chandigarh. It continues to sport the rustic flourishes of highway eateries; quirky truck art, elements of humour, and a menu that reads comfortingly like home. In my experience, except for that one forgettable visit in the early days, Dhaba 7 has dished out consistently satisfying food since they opened for business in 2018. This is regardless of whether you order in their Balti Meat, Dal Dhaba and Dadi da Dhania Aloo, or enjoy the Amritsari Kukkad, Khumb Mattar, and Subz Patiala seated in the life-size truck body at the restaurant, a trademark of the brand. They also host a well-stocked Theka and are steadily gaining traction for their live gigs calendar.
Food:
Dhaba 7 specialises in Panjabi and Mughlai dishes, but you can expect to find the odd fusion preparation like Crackling Spinach,Tandoori Prawns, or Chinese Bhel. I’ve a special fondness for another, the creamy-cheesy Tandoori Broccoli, best eaten at the restaurant as it doesn’t travel well. My recent experience of their food included Lahsooni Palak (a personal favourite), Malai Kofta, and Murg Malai Tikka. I had the order doorstep delivered to complement the ghar da khana for unexpected arrivals.
Plus & Minus:
The food arrived warm in spill-proof microwaveable containers, and the portions were sizeable. If you like spiced dishes, the garlicky spinach may well become a habit. I wish they wouldn’t puree the palak to a fine paste though; some amount of bite would be welcome. The paneer koftas were pillowy soft, well made, and came drowned in creamy gravy, which for my palate was a tad too sweet but appreciated, by others. The well-marinated chicken tikkas, flavourful chunks of smoky succulence, were relished just as much by all present. Like I said, Dhaba 7 rarely disappoints.
