Dear Donna, Qutab Institutional Area, New Delhi: Decor
When people started cycling during pandemic, the joke was ‘Rajpath is the new Dear Donna’. As people started stepping out, the question everyone asked was ‘On a scale of I’ve started to move out to I’ve been to Dear Donna, how out and about you are’. The meme doing the rounds that time was that if Dear Donna shut down, then it is really the end of restaurants in the city. This place is nothing short of a modern-day icon in the city. There is the restaurant industry with its own set of market dynamics and pandemic problems and there’s Dear Donna. The popularity of this high energy bar and restaurant is such a miracle for restaurateurs that you would find most of them partying at Dear Donna on the weekend to understand what makes the place among the most buzzing spaces in town.
Dear Donna, Qutab Institutional Area, New Delhi: Food
There used to be such a jostle to order here that one always settled for straight drinks along with a pizza and Asian rolls while swooning to Bhavuk’s music and never bothered to look at the menu. This time though, one finally sat down for meal and drinks. We followed our host Joshua’s recommendations and realized Dear Donna has a very good European and Asian food menu by chef Sadeev Pasricha along with a decent cocktail list. A collection of comfort European and Asian dishes, stack of umami beans — string beans with sesame, burnt garlic and crushed peanuts (Rs. 195), Comfort rice and noodle bowls, pasta and risotto, pizzas and Asian rolls are good to go with your signature cock-tails. Nectar – gin, elderflower, lychee juice and lime concoction (Rs. 550) or Dear Donna gimlet—a gin and homemade Kaffir lime concoction (Rs. 600) are worth a try. A slow cooked lamb shoulder (Rs. 725) with Peni-chillin — a whisky, ginger honey syrup and lemon juice cocktail (Rs. 600) was floor captain Prashant’s combination to beat the chill. And it did surpass our expectations. There are decent negroni and sour selections on the menu as well but their cocktails still seem to be a work in progress. A bit more finesse in flavors is expected from a place known for its bar.
Plus & Minus:
The place gets buzzing over the week-end but catching the attention of the staff too becomes difficult. Weekend nights should be all about partying here while brunches and weekday dinners are a good way to enjoy a full meal and drinks experience. Home delivery is also available.
