Dank, T. Nagar, Chennai: Decor
Everywhere you look, there’s some form of Mr. Moose (or Mrs. Moose) posing for you. Dank even has a huge quirky moose-wala mural on a prominent wall at the far end of the large space. A whole length is dominated by the bar, showcasing the variety of liquor that any self-respecting bartender would be proud of.
On the whole, it is a huge warm space with adequate golden lighting that borders on being muted and different seating options to suit your mood.
Dank, T. Nagar, Chennai: Food
The Mezze Platter has a fresh avocado dip because, just that morning, Chef found some perfect avocados in the market. The zatarsprinkled smoky pita tasted good with the dip, as it did with the hummus and salsa.
Thukpa — not on the regular menu — is, again, a blend of local ingredients. Spicy and sinus-releasing, it has fat red chillies, fresh yellow turmeric and a momo topped with Nepali chutney right inside the soup. A delicious warm fusion of north and south in a bowl of broth.
African street food, now called The Nut Job, is chicken chunks on skewers. On the dry side, the meat itself is not as exciting as the flavours that surround it. The use of peanut, garlic, onion and paprika in a paste, and the kachumber (finely diced salad) that comes along are a nice touch, though they fail to elevate the chicken to moist levels, because these are breast pieces, which are characteristically on the dry side.
The Home Made Ravioli is quite the cutie. The Mushroom and Cheese in Italian tomato and cream sauce has a hint of tang, with the cream doing a good job of keeping it in control. The ravioli itself is complete.
White Forest has a beautiful vanilla aroma and the texture is exactly how it should be, with a sprinkle of surprise crunches of crumbled praline and the goodness of milk. No egg added.
Plus & Minus:
I like how the chefs incorporate local, fresh ingredients in their food instead of being rigid about what they serve. Even though they had parking in front, they have issues with letting drivers park there. The best thing would be to let their valet park your car and bring it back to you.
