32nd Avenue in Gurgaon is a well thought out space that you could transpose anywhere else in the world and it would still be just as charming and efficient. Open to the sky walkway, plenty of greenery and a cheerful (though never maniacal) bustle makes it a pleasant outing for the whole family. There are eateries for every taste.

I must confess that I have visited too few outlets, but I have made two trips to COMO. This is because there are far too few restaurants in the NCR run by owners and too many run by managers, chefs and staff. The rather zany young couple who own COMO came by their present profession because of their obsession with pizzas (you’ll have to taste the smokiness in the Napolitan crust to know why) and they are usually serving tables and taking orders. The menu does meander around the globe, but that is because the couple’s favorites come from across the globe.

COMO: Pizzeria, Sector 15, Gurgaon – Food

Our meal started with the chef’s special spaghetti al limone (₹475). It ticked all the boxes: vegetarian compliant, al dente pasta (upon request), plenty of umami via the lemon butter and parmesan, and value for money with a generous drizzle of pistachio crumbs. Burrata and cranberry salad (₹475) was another masterpiece, where the burrata was dewy fresh and the dried cranberry was an inspired combination to contrast with the creamy cheese with an oozing centre and the slightly peppery appeal of the bed of rucola. Rather than a standard dressing, there was a cranberry glaze to moisten the ingredients that worked very well. However, the star of the show is the black hummus (₹655) that is both suitable for vegetarians and is gluten-free. The appearance is dramatic, thanks to the black sesame that has been ground and added to the chickpea mash.

The vegetables atop the hummus include broccoli and button mushrooms make for a stunning visual appeal, besides having a high umami quotient. The owning couple, who left high-power jobs in the corporate sector to start up pizzerias, is obsessed with chicken wings. Wings in mango habanero sauce (₹595) have the trademark prickle of one of the world’s spiciest chillies.

Plus & Minus:

Space in this little trattoria is a little tight but the menu contains unmissable gems.
