Coffee Nation, Law College Road, Pune: Decor
Both the outlets are located on two of the busiest roads in Pune. This week, I visited the Law College Road outlet. The outdoor section that overlooks the high street is partially covered with two large patio umbrellas. The seating here is metal and wood patio chairs which is simple and perfect for the setting. Through a wooden frame French door, the indoor section is elegantly designed. The use of muted grey on the walls coupled with wooden panels gives it a classic cafe look. The seating is a mix of metal and wood chairs and loungey sofas with reclaimed metal trunks as tables. One wall is dedicated to frames with coffee quotes and some others have bookshelves filled with a range of books and games.
Coffee Nation, Law College Road, Pune: Food
The menu is an elevated cafe menu with a range of freshly brewed coffee and tea along with a great variety of hot chocolates and freak shakes. The food menu has salads, sandwiches and a baffling range of waffles. We started with the classic caesar salad which was fresh and perfectly dressed. Among the sandwiches, we picked the paneer peri-peri, pulled pork and creamy corn and spinach. The sandwiches were served alongside some crisps and coleslaw. The corn and spinach filling was delicious and creamy and was served in fresh and lightly toasted ciabatta bread. The other two sandwiches tasted fine, but it seemed some elements were missing. The paneer peri-peri filling was runny and underseasoned and the pulled pork was extremely dry. The pork was cooked well and seasoned right, but was missing a sauce to bring it together. But the bread in the sandwiches used was excellent. It would be great if they can add a counter and sell fresh bread and other bakes. Like mentioned previously, the range of waffles is absolutely baffling. We tried the simple maple waffle which was served with maple syrup, whipped cream and a scoop of vanilla ice cream and the Twix waffle which was generously topped with chocolate sauce, Nutella and pieces of Twix and served with chocolate ice cream. The freshly made waffles were crispy from the outside and soft from inside. Instead of desserts, we decided to finish our meal with their signature coffees and teas. Affogato is a no-brainer and always tastes great. But with their freshly brewed, single-origin coffee, it was even better. The salted pretzel and caramel freakshake had the most unique and contrasting flavours and tasted great. It was almost a meal in itself. We ended our time at Coffee Nation with a round of fresh and restorative Moroccan mint tea.
Plus & Minus:
Both the Coffee Nation outlets have become hangout joints and the crowd ranges from college-goers and youngsters to even families. The setting and ambience are perfect for a cafe. The initial disappointment of the sandwiches was salvaged by the delicious and sinful waffles. It is impressive to see a home-grown cafe chain located in two of the most prime locations in the city, giving their international contemporaries a serious run for their money.
