When Chaitanya Paranthas started in 1999 on Fergusson College Road, it was an instant success. I remember while in college we used to frequent Chaitanya for the wide range of value-for-money parathas they served.

Chaitanya Paranthas, FC Road, Pune: Food

The paratha culture in Pune is quite popular now, but when Chaitanya started it was one of the few places that served a variety of parathas. This week, I decided to order from their FC branch. Having previously ordered on multiple occasions, I knew exactly which parathas to order. I ordered their signature aloo paratha which is always tasty. The filling is mildly spicy with green chillies and stuffed generously. The aloo cheese variant was equally good. But this time I tried the other parathas on the menu along with my regular aloo and aloo cheese ones. Among the others, my personal favourite was the methi corn paratha which was full of the wonderful methi flavour stuffed with sweet corn. This one had a very homely feel to it. The Peshawari paratha was another top pick for us. The stuffing was a mix of aloo, cheese and capsicum along with green chillies. The paneer mushroom combination seemed slightly odd but the contrasting textures and flavours of paneer and mushroom really worked together. The gobi chilli cheese paratha was a letdown. It was overstuffed and was completely soggy when we opened the package. All the parathas were served with green pudina chutney, chilli pickle and dahi. While the chutney was tasty, the accompanying dahi has no taste. It was thinned down and under-seasoned. I was craving for creamy, thick curd with the parathas. The menu also has thali options which include a Punjabi thali, a special thali and a wide variety of stuffed paratha thalis. We tried the Amritsari paratha thali. The Amritsari paratha had a stuffing of aloo, paneer, onion and pudina which was very tasty. The thali included a portion of mildly spicy chhole, creamy dal makhani and a boondi raita. Parathas and lassi is a match made in heaven. So the almond-laden, rich, creamy and delightful Patiala lassi was the best accompaniment to the parathas and a great end to our meal.

Plus & Minus:

The parathas, combos and thali are tasty and value-for-money. While the 60 plus types of parathas on the menu is impressive, it is difficult to discern the distinct taste and flavour of the different parathas.
