Peel away the exciting fact that this brand new Persian restaurant has been set up by the daughter of the legendary Bollywood superstars Nargis and Sunil Dutt. Take away the fact that the multi-talented member of the Lok Sabha, Priya Dutt teamed up with an accomplished chef to set up Cafe Mommy Joon and what do we have? We have a seriously good restaurant that captures the flavors and culture of Persia.
I ordered in delivery from Cafe Mommy Joon and enjoyed the mellow, authentic flavors of Persia. So, I decided to order in food for yet another charming and multi-talented politician, Shaina NC, BJP spokesperson and celebrated fashion designer. She’s a discerning foodie and long-time family friend. Over the years, I’ve had the most memorable meals in the gardens of her parents, Nana and Munira Chudasama’s home as well her home, too. Shaina gave a thumbs up to the food and, in particular, loved the smoked aubergine, hummus, saffron rice and baklava.
Cafe Mommy Joon, Bandra West, Mumbai: Persia In Mumbai
Holistic Persian experience here. Mommy Joon offers an excellent taste of Persian culture with its beautiful Iranian interiors and exteriors, and choice of intricate cutlery and crockery. The talented Seema Sadiquien (whose family has eight decades of culinary experience) and Priya Dutt are close family friends, who have come together to gift this taste of Persia to Mumbai. This family feeling cocoons you in the cafe, too. The library that displays the collection of books belonging to Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt delights. (As soon as lockdown is lifted, must dine in here).
Traditional and authentic Irani specialties like teas, stews, kebobs, polows, wraps, salads and more. Go for the Persian classic, the fall-off the-bone, Mahiche (Persian Lamb Shanks) perfect when eaten with and served with Baghali Polo — Broad Bean and Dill Rice. Subtly spiced, signature Lamb Koobideh sublime with saffron rice. Superb mezze, too. Take your pick from the range of kabobs. Kabob Koobideh, the barbecued lamb tenderloin Chenjeh. Fans of the tangy berry, ask for the Zereshk Polow veg version, too. Plenty for vegetarians (Addas Polow) and pescatarians (Sabzi Polow Mahi).
End with the Akbar Mashti Saffron and Rose Water Ice Cream and the warm superb baklava. Don’t forget to take a sip of Persian culture (Chai e Sadeh).
Mommy Knows Best:
It’s a touching and delicious tribute to family, to mother. The word joon in Farsi means dear, and this was their way to pay tribute to mother dear as all the dishes are handed down from mother to daughter. The food is authentic Persian cuisine made with utmost love as if feeding your own family. We welcome Priya Dutt and Seema Sadiquien’s brand new Persian restaurant. As we go to press, it’s sad that dine-in has been shut down in Mumbai. But thankfully, delivery is still available and this food lends itself beautifully to being delivered. The key ingredients like saffron, Limoo Amani spices are all imported from Iran. There’s plenty for vegetarians. Some of these main-course options are extraordinarily mild-flavoured, deeply consoling, almost meditative in their effect. You may have tried some of the more common dishes, but in Mommy Joon, you will experience that the sense of bounty, diversity and discovery is exhilarating. Mommy certainly knows best!
