Without meaning to play favorites, it is clear that out of all of Delhi’s hotels, the one that has the most professional food and beverage concepts is the Hyatt Regency Delhi. Each of their restaurants has a most definitive thought process behind it and the result is that it has borne rewards. The Chinese restaurant, the Italian trattorio, the Asian teppanyaki, the pastry counter – each of these have been landmarks in their own right, and none more so than Café, the all-day diner. While the meal-time buffet spreads are the most powerful draws, it has always been a favourite off hours venue for me because of the natural light, the optimal service (the staff understand who wants how much service and provide it in the correct iteration) and the surprising eats that you don’t find in other hotel all-day diners.
Cafe: Hyatt Regency Delhi, Bhikaji Cama, New Delhi – Food
Off meal-times, you can choose between a Niçoise salade (₹1,055) or a matra kulcha (₹815)! For sheer cool quotient, that’s a tough act to beat. The Niçoise salade has potatoes, beans, onion segments and coarsely chopped tuna, with my favourite Kalamata olives: one reason why I am partial to this salad. It is light yet filling, substantial yet not heavy. If you are looking for something from the Indian menu, Café is one of the few hotel restaurants that serves chaat, that too, quite creditably. I had the dahi bhalla (₹744) in whipped curd, with a splash of mint and coriander chutney and a dash of sweet ginger chutney. It takes the edge off your hunger while leaving you craving for more. Very impressive in a luxury hotel! A few tables away, someone was polishing off a masala dosa with apparent relish, so the Indian snacks and chaat menu certainly is a thoughtful touch in a hotel of this scale! Western savouries that can be enjoyed a few hours before dinner include grilled ham and cheese panini (₹1,190) where the bread had been grilled more than it need have been, but the ham (from the shoulder, cured in Germany) had been cut thickly and laid on the bread with a satisfyingly generous slice of English Cheddar. Even better was the lamb burger (₹2,020) with rashers of bacon, iceberg lettuce, tomato slices, onion rings and gherkins. The bun held its shape till the last bite!
Plus & Minus:
The lunch and dinner buffets are justly popular, but so is the in-between meals menu.
