Overview:
Cafe De Piccolo A popular Dehra Dun eatery, Cafe De Piccolo made its debut in Chandigarh a couple of months ago. It wears the inviting look and feel of a cozy cottage–ambient lighting, chintzy furnishings, vintage décor, and an eclectic mix of seating sectioned across a chessboard floor. They specialize in European favourites and you can expect a smattering of soups, salads, a fine selection of sandwiches, pizzas and pastas, waffles, crepes, and pancakes, and a handful of desserts. The specials section lists everything from Lemon Rosemary Chicken to Fish & Chips and Spaghetti Bolognese to Lamb Shank. Look sharp, also, for the daily specials chalked out on a board near the entrance.
Cafe De Piccolo, Sector 9, Chandigarh: Food
A bunch of us showed up one rainy afternoon recently to find it abuzz with lunch-goers. One of the daily specials–Pink Pepper Chicken – had caught our eye on arrival and we went with it. We ordered a Greek Salad, Mushroom Ravioli, and Garlic Bread to keep it company. Watermelon juice and Americanos washed down a slice of Hummingbird Cake as dessert.
Cafe De Piccolo, Sector 9, Chandigarh: Plus & Minus
The salad was a heaped bed of crunchy lettuce with a sprinkling of peppers, onions, tomatoes, olives, and feta cheese; not quite the Greek Salad of my experience, despite the use of quality ingredients. The Homemade Mushroom Ravioli, creamy, peppery, with a generous bite of the mushroom filling, was delicious, as were the butter-dripping garlic toasts we’d requested as a side. Our chicken dish came in a skillet with grilled veggies and jacket potatoes. The dish was tasty enough but the accompanying pink pepper sauce was bland, lacking the mild fruity-peppery flavour the berry promises. The coffee was well brewed, our generously sized dessert moist and the cream cheese frosting fresh, and while I could taste bananas distinctly in each bite, the other key ingredient, pineapple, didn’t make its presence felt. The staff here is courteous and attentive; a training refresher is in order though, especially on product knowledge. And how to handle beverage glasses or cups during service–never by the rim.
