Cafe De Paris, Teynampet, Chennai: DECOR

Yes. Cafe De Paris does have outdoor seating for the brave. And, from the looks of it, nobody is in the mood to soak in some afternoon sun. All the awning covered colorful tables in the garden look soulfully lonely. But, the air-conditioned glass house, with a tree growing through the roof, is full of happy diners. The cafe has a lovely feel to it. Metal and tiled tables, bordered with brilliant azure, have cute touches of fresh flowers smiling in vases.

A stage dominates one side and sits empty in the afternoons. However, nobody looks like they are missing a spot of live performances.

For someone who wants a quick, filling, healthy, light, meal, the roasted pumpkin soup could well be that meal. I love the small cubes of pumpkin hiding inside the yellow cheddar-dominated thickness. The perfectly crumbly bread sticks tell me they are fresh. I do miss a dot of butter on them, though. Well, the cheese in the soup will just have to do, I guess.

On their new menu, the chipotle paneer squares are quite the spicy ones. Red, soft and thin, they are deliciously crusty and pungent. The sweetish cocktail dip does a good job of softening its intensity.

My main course, baked chicken with broccoli has mushrooms, too. Creamy, it has chicken breast pieces that are well cooked and have every right to be in this perfectly salted dish. The watery settlement at the bottom of my platter, though, has no business to be there.

Grilled fish with creamy spinach turns out to be quite a surprise. I like how the chef has given bland spinach a sweet, flavorful twist. Mild English mustard adds an elegance to it, and the grilled grouper proclaims its freshness by being succulent.

Right from the beginning of my meal, my eyes keep going back to the dessert display, particularly the fromage biscuits, dotted with chocolate chips. At the end of my meal, I order one, and am asked if I’d like it hot or cold… Now, that’s a dilemma! I ask for half to be heated and the other half to be served cold. A bigger dilemma presents itself. I like both. One lets the gooey chocolate mix with the cream cheese and crunch of the biscuit in my mouth, while the other lets each element hold its own…

I love how they have built the restaurant around a tree, and the feeling of openness even in the glass house.
