Move over old ‘Bombay Brasserie’. Here comes its new avatar. It’s rollicking, it’s casual, it’s fun dining. It’s got nothing in common with “Bombay Brasserie” of yore except the name. And my globetrotting foodie companions Nina and PK Vasa (just back from Singapore) not only enjoy it but also celebrate Nina’s birthday. Cheers with ingenious cocktails ‘Kollywood Pop’ in pauwa bottles. It’s celebration time for sure!

BOMBAY BRASSERIE THEN (1989 to 2002)

It was here (after training with the BBC) that I shot my very first TV show with Dilip Kumar, who was a regular. It used to magnetize the who’s who of the city with its elegant, traditional North Indian food (smattering of Pan Indian). It was an upscale legend created by the legendary film producer and restaurateur JK Kapur. His son and grandsons have revived BB in several cities. Our review of Mumbai’s BB (run by young Akash Israni) follows.

Bombay Brasserie, Worli, Mumbai: DECOR

A pleasant, lively surprise. BB replaces 212 and then AKA (opp Nehru Centre). A glass roofed outdoor area with house plants, a long bar and three dining spaces, each one decorated distinctly.

Bombay Brasserie, Worli, Mumbai: FOOD

Tasty Hot plates, street grills, paired curries and more. Dish after dish displays ingenuity and inspiration. Regional ingredients (be it Kudampuli from Kerala, Aam Papad from Amritsar, Malwani spices, Bhut Jholokia, Kasundi from Bengal) tango with unusual partners. From the coin-sized round plump oozing Cheese Chilly Kebab to the delicious Mango Prawns paired with Banana leaf steamed rice delight. Outstanding, long giant kebab on the delicious Kashmiri Naan with Walnut Dahi, Kasundi marinated Rawas. Shikha Nath also ensures there is plenty for vegetarians. Potatoes enlivened with gunpowder, Sweet Potatoes with sweet tangy pomegranate Rice infused with coconut leaf and even the Chur Chur Paratha is super flaky. Dreamy creaminess personified creamy Kulfi with rabdi. Spongy Rasgullas cheekily and brilliantly paired with aamras.

Bombay Brasserie, Worli, Mumbai: MINUS POINTS

It can get really noisy (kids running around). Conventional dishes like Chicken Biryani is lackluster, Chakhna, soggy. Some of the plating is too gimmicky with mason jars, etc.

Bombay Brasserie, Worli, Mumbai: MY POINT

Open all day. Lunch, dinner and highchai. Fun dining takes centre-stage in this recent rollicking reincarnation of the old Bombay Brasserie. A few of the conventional mains are disappointments. On the whole, oomph marks the cheekily tweaked modern Indian fare. Happily, no molecular gastronomy or cerebral shenanigans either. Accessible and popular dish spectrum. High impact flavors. Low impact pricing. Cheers!
