Yes, the rain gods have opened the sluice gates! And soaring high demands for more mush and perky tastebuds drives us to scan our digi-pet smart phones for suitable food experiences. The Monsoon Chai Party curated by Bombay Brasserie, is a brilliant idea, summing up all cravings for the season. An effort to bring together the fries and the fritters in a menu of enchanting snacks and pairing it with hot, simulating milky tea in terracotta bhanr is all an idea worthy of an impromptu rain dance. All day, anyday.

Bombay Brasserie, Quest Mall, Ballygunge, Kolkata: Food

The lineage of the tea and snacks menu is authentic and handpicked from the ‘khau gullys’ across the diversity of regional India. The chirpy set of milky monsoon tea varieties served in typical tapori-style khullars in combination with chaats, fritters, rustic sliders, street vendor spicy picks, rolls and mini meals pack in the punch alright. And in case you feel confused, a pre-fixed set of Chai party box (₹550) even makes the selection easier for the uninitiated. There’s no escaping this. We choose both a la carte and a party box comprising a choice of street-pick (Howrah cutlet and ghugni) + a bun pav slider or a roll (Anda nizami Chicken roomali roll) + choice of chai (500ml) + rusk (4 pieces) + chocolate samosa (2 pieces). From the a la carte we want the Hot kadhi samosa (₹245), Bombay kanda bhaji (₹195), Tikkiwala chole bun (₹225), Goa chicken fry pav (₹275), Keema salli bun (₹295) and Coimbatore mushroom paratha roll (₹245).

The insider’s tip for pre-ordering is to go with peak timing between 3pm to 5pm, to avoid running out of stocks sooner.

Bombay Brasserie, Quest Mall, Ballygunge, Kolkata: Plus & Minus

There’s a slight delay in the aggregator delivery, but is quickly forgotten as the spread arrives in imitable style – a couple of colorful umbrellas branded, array of Monsoon Chai Party picnic boxes and bags, labeled with hygiene protocol stickers start the party with a bang. It’s all in the fun of discovering the goodies in each box! The first paper bag reveals the cardboard covered spout pouch with strong and warm, fragrant ginger tea, alongside earthen pots and sugar sachets. The double whammy of still-warm-from the-wok deep fried onion fritters or Bombay kanda bhaji with potent green chillies make a great accompaniment. Next, the small discs of crumb-coated beetroot cutlets and slurpy version of the curried whole yellow peas or Bengali ghugni, moderately spiced with chopped green chillies, adds a touch of perfect Calcutta nostalgia.

The Hot kadhi samosa chaat, is a quick DIY lesson of hand smashed potato samosas, topped with generous drizzles of yoghurt and gram flour kadhi, chilli tamarind chutney, green mint chutney and sprinkle of bhujiya for crunch.

The sliders come in mini versions of twin sets with novelty in bun fillings: tradition of Amritsari masala chole and aloo tikki stuffing in hot and sweet chutney, the chic Goan chicken fry version slathered in coconut slaw and peri peri spices between pavs and the legendary Parsi bun maska salli kheema from Bombay’s Irani cafés, all culminate into food-infused adrenaline rush! There’s more, the inventive curried mushrooms and caramelised onion rolled in parantha from Coimbatore and the fried egg layered roomali roti wrapped around piquant Nizami chicken seekh kebabs, both bring in adventure to the palate from the southern parts of India. Oh, they forgot to add the chocolate-filled samosas to our party pack, now that would have just made it a complete sell-out.
