Boma Asian Bakery, Park Street Area, Kolkata: Decor

I am fond of many home grown brands. Especially when I know the back story and see the awkward six-year-old blossom into a beautiful professional with a passion for hobby baking. Sonam Dolkar Seth and her friend Manisha Sangma started their bake story during the pandemic. Their experiments from home ground with mini assorted eclairs, filled choux and the delicate Japanese cheese cake — often ordered from their home in Salt Lake, made complete business sense under the brand name Boma Asian Bakery. Btw, Boma is Manisha’s toddler.

Now they are all set up at a pristine pastel and pink cherry blossom café / bakery at the old Sikkim House address under the patronage of Sonam’s home chef-entrepreneur mother Doma Wang, with a café worthy menu. We order aggregator delivery to set new standards for our festive sweets and savory for this Bijoya, bidding adieu to the Goddess.

Food: Boma Asian Bakery, Park Street Area, Kolkata

The originality of the menu strikes a chord. So does the differential strategy with a tag of an “Asian” bakery. And a fruitful marriage and location with their family brand The Blue Poppy Thakali is an amiable partnership with sister Sachiko to extend and add more fun and opportunity of pairing with the trending popularity of their signature Sikkimese, Chinese, Nepali menu. We go in random order with
their Pepper Mushroom Bun (90), Pork kothay momo (₹ 185), Corn dogs (₹ 300), Chilli butter wings (₹ 350), Bacon wrapped sausages Yakitori (₹ 280) with Custard choux set of 3 (₹ 120), Assorted eclairs (₹ 240), Jam filled donut (₹ 85) and the signature mini Japanese cheesecake (₹ 350 for 0. 5 pound).

Plus and Minus:

The Pepper mushroom bun stares at us with its perfectly rounded face with tiny black bead eyes, it’s almost a pity we have to bite into the soft milk bun stuffed with minced mushrooms sautéed in perky pepper to savor its full flavours. The corn dogs dive straight into high school K-drama, highly influenced by the Korean version of half sausage and half stringy mozzarella coated with flour and light crispy crumb topping, these deep fried lollies drive home the snacking fun alright. In comparison, the Mini pork kothay or Pot sticker momos are a bit oily and lack lustre, maybe due to travel; yet the crispy skin on, butter basted chilli butter wings is a stunner that satiates all cravings. Finally, the bite-sized, bacon wrapped sausage grills, in sweet teriyaki sauce culminates the drum roll of evening snacks with no regrets. This begins the onslaught of delicate Asian patisserie in progressive order: The light and airy texture of the soft, slightly crusty exterior in the choux pastries drive us to clouds of silky smooth custard fills; the assorted eclairs are from bolster heaven with generous cream filled moist and crusty choux smothered in salty caramel, naughty dark chocolate and snowy white chocolate eruptions and the deep fried house donut with the ruby red mixed fruit jam insertion and sugar dusting is the next level of dessert devotion. The ultimate climax with the Japanese cheese cake is a lesson in sophistication, subtle and light with wee jiggly effects before it disappears into cherished dessert memory forever.
