Black Orchid, RA Puram, Chennai: Decor
Black is Black Orchid. With gold, of course. Touches of white on the walls, rich green, wooden flooring, and the interior decorator’s signature murals. Black Orchid is the new party place in town and is putting up quite a show with its three floors, so nobody feels cramped. There’s a private dining room, pool table and enough space for everybody. The ground floor even allows tiny tots (accompanied by adults, of course) to drop by and enjoy a spot of socializing.
Black Orchid, RA Puram, Chennai: Food
Lately, everybody is into Sushi. So here it comes, Greenland Maki: avocado, Chinese lettuce, carrot, asparagus and Shiitake surrounded by rice, topped with Japanese Mayo and juicy, shiny ruby colored pomegranate arils. Tiny beads of tempura add to the crunch, if you eat it quickly. The veggies have their crunch intact, telling me these are as fresh as they can get. Of course, wasabi (made from imported Japanese powder), pink ginger gari and a slight skim into the soy cup make a difference to how this Greenland Maki tastes.
Deep-fried, the Spice Dusted Lotus Stem basket holds slices of crunch. The stems taste even better when I dip them in the sweet chilli sauce. A swipe into the accompanying mayo (just because it is there) makes me wonder why it is even served. Maybe mayo makes the whole dish look better, a bit ‘more’?
Enter Green Vegetables in Garlic Butter. Flecks of roasted, crisp, fragrant garlic cover the top. Butter being butter, is divine and goes beautifully with the soy and the green vegetables that are cooked just enough to remove their rawness without compromising on the munch too much.
Not to be missed is the Norwegian Salmon in Sumiso Sauce. Thick, dark brown, sweet, salty and distinct, the miso based sumiso sauce also has the Japanese Misugan vinegar adding its personality to the bold, glossy, sophisticated salmon. Result: a totally addictive main course. Now comes the dilemma: Wasabi Ice Cream or Chocolate Hazelnut Delice. Maybe a bit of both? Totally worth it. The Wasabi Ice Cream – strong, sweet, creamy, cold. Chocolate Hazelnut Delice – open textured cake with 45% Callebaut chocolate, caramel fudge layer along with hazelnut cream. And OMG addictive.
Plus & Minus:
Location, location, location. The Black Orchid has it all and it has the premises to match. Hope they keep up their food and beverage standards.
