The Bengaluru Baking Co. at the JW Marriott received a makeover not long ago. It’s now a pretty spot downtown for a coffee break or cocktails with a small food menu. The al fresco area is particularly nice, with plenty of greenery inviting you to unwind and relax.
The food menu is a compact one-pager. There’s all-day breakfast with choices to suit all sorts of tastes and dietary preferences. There’s Egg White Frittata with feta, zucchini and asparagus for those who’re watching their cholesterol and Ragi Pancake with pineapple compote if you have embraced the idea of eating more millets. It’s not all about counting calories and carbs. You can also indulge in the Bagel and Salmon for a NYC-style meal.
One section of the menu celebrates retro dishes and is a lineup of popular café fare from the past. Lacy Beef Cutlets and Mutton Samosa pay tribute to the Irani café. You cannot get more old-fashioned than Stroganoff and the Bengaluru Baking Company serves both beef and chicken ver sions over herbed rice.
There’s also a list of sandwiches, covering the gamut from Vada Pao to a Po’ boy filled with shrimp and remoulade, plus a corn, jalapeno and mozzarella Melt. Though street food doesn’t translate well in five-star kitchens, the Bombay Toasty here ticks all the boxes. The BBC Club promises much with its filling of pesto-grilled chicken, prosciutto, provolone and tapenade in ciabatta, but doesn’t deliver on account of the ingredients failing to make the mark. What I frequently enjoy here is the Kadak Masala Chai that serves as an excellent pick-me up. There are also more elegant brews like the Oolong.
Bengaluru Baking Company also does a range of signature cocktails and stocks premium spirits. So, you could go here for an after-work sundowner.
Service has been shaky on the last couple of occasions I’ve been to this café. It’s the JW after all, and expectations are bound to be high.
