Banana Leaf, Satellite, Ahmedabad: Decor

Located on the ground floor of a building, Banana Leaf’s signage and ornate studded door is visible from the main road running from Manekbaug to Shyamal crossroads. The South Indian themed decor of the restaurant is visible through its glass walls. Inside, the intricate latticed screens and traditional bells are the centerpiece of the restaurant, while the walls bear many South Indian motifs like a temple gopuram and Kathakali masks.

Banana Leaf, Satellite, Ahmedabad: Food

Largely focused on Udupi style food, the menu also covers dishes from other parts of South India and fusion dishes. The jeera milagu rasam is a peppery soup, while Jains could opt for the thakkali parippu rasam which is a dal-based tomato soup.

The restaurant has a long list of idlis including their house special fusion versions like the Coorg idli in a tomato, onion and garlic mixture which is slightly moist, the rich Kanchipuram idli with nuts and dry fruits, Malabari stew idli, the minty Mulgai idli or Chettinadidli. The Dakshin masala idli is their signature. They also have a good range of uttappam and Udupi style soft dosa. There are also versions with ragi or oats for those avoiding rice.

We enjoyed the tissue-soft neer dosa with paneer gassi made in a thick Mangalorean style coconut gravy, the appamwith vegetable stew and idiappam with curry. Mushroom sukka is a good Mangalorean style starter. You could also opt for one dish rice meals. They have a small selection of North Indian dishes like chole bature.

Desserts are a forte of Banana Leaf – the payasams and halwas were excellent.

Plus & Minus:

The restaurant has a good range of vegetarian food from South India. It also has a long beverage menu ranging from juices to filter coffee. Some of the waiters have limited knowledge of South Indian food but as it is still new this will hopefully get sorted out with time.
