Delicious irony! I lunch at a predictable, comforting Kala Ghoda café and do so with a global path-breaking icon of the hospitality world. As we munch our way through the comfort food, I’m even more dazzled by the Indian-British hotelier Sonu Shivdasani who, along with his wife Eva, created the template for sustainable tourism and coined the concepts of slow life and intelligent luxury. Their amazing environment friendly hotels serve up luxury holidays.
Skiing, spirituality and sailing are his passions, while golf, reading and travelling are his Maldives-based area manager Ranvir Bhandari’s hobbies. And both are discerning foodies. Both enjoy the food here.
Bake House Cafe, Fort, Mumbai: DECOR
Quirky, cheery decor in this Kala Ghoda Cafe meets Hollywood. Artwork of famous Hollywood stars on the walls and chairs et al. Wooden steps lead to a small mezzanine section.
Bake House Cafe, Fort, Mumbai: FOOD
A menu that zigzags all over to include sandwiches, burgers, pasta, pizzas, salad et al. Succulent Barbeque sauced Sirloin Steak with melted cheese wedged into the fluffy sandwich and sparkled with jalapenos. Tasty, buttermilk marinated chicken encased in the Krusty Burger delights. Wafer-thin Pizza topped with Barbecue Chicken, too, is recommended. In the midst of all this calorific fare, the healthy organic Red Rice Risotto surprises with its flavour and nutty bite. I go back for a late breakfast another day and the healthy Bruce Lee’s Muesli and the full-packed Protein egg White Breakfast satisfies. Plenty of other healthy options — be it warm Broken Wheat Pine Nuts Salad or Citrus Couscous Salad.
Bake House Cafe, Fort, Mumbai: MINUS POINTS
Bake House Cafe has drawbacks. The over sweet, flat-footed desserts need improvement. We pick a whole bunch (cupcakes, apple pie and mud cake) from the display counter; only the cheesecake is just about average. The seafood salad of Organic Black Rice, topped with Fresh Prawns and Calamari is mushy. Overdone leathery potato skins and a gloopy, lackluster Eggs Florentine. Mixed up, slow service. No alcohol. Parking impossible.
Bake House Cafe, Fort, Mumbai: MY POINT
Cheery, well-located, open all-day Bake House Café. There is no wow, no culinary pizazz here but we still welcome this new Bake House Café. It has comfort food and comforting pocket friendly prices.
