Asian Station, Anna Nagar, Chennai: DECOR

First-time restaurateur, Rohan Ahuja has poured his personality and a lot of effort into his new passion: Asian Station, as is evident from the decor. Large and airy, the open kitchen is quite engrossing to watch. This is where the action takes place, and there is nothing more interesting than watching food being created, even if it means you have to stand on your toes and crane your neck a bit. Less intriguing, but interesting, the black ceiling with exposed air-conditioning ducts. Yellow, fuchsia and blue upholstery brighten the whole place. Sensible, tiled flooring holds polished wood en furniture, with white table tops.

Asian Station, Anna Nagar, Chennai: FOOD

While the flavors are all there in the Tom Yum Soup, it would help if Asian Station would use fresh prawns instead of the frozen ones. These are succulent (the chef has tried) but the ‘frozen’ taste cannot be camouflaged. Succulent morsels of deep-fried Hot Thai Chilli Chicken more than make up for the soup. Tossed in chilli sauce, they carry flavors of lemongrass and kafir lime giving the chicken a Thai twist. Bringing a little drama to the table, Khou Suey is mixed under your supervision, so you can monitor how much of each ingredient you’d like. It is a medley of flavors and textures. Crunchy, soft, slippery… Do remember to squeeze Do remember to squeeze a dash of fresh lime onto your newly made Khou Suey it adds a new dimension to the Khou Suey. Newly squeezed coconut milk has a way of coaxing out the flavors from fresh veggies, and it does work well in the Thai Green Curry at Asian Station. Mix in some fragrant Jasmine rice, and bingo. You’re all set. A hot favorite (literally and figuratively) the Orange Basil Honey Noodles with ice cream are hot and cold, and filled with the flavors of honey. I do think the orange tang needs to be upped a bit, but otherwise, this is worth a try.
