Alma Bakery & Cafe, Hajipur, Noida: Decor
One of the biggest surprises in Noida is how green, well-laid out and orderly it is, compared to the other of Delhi’s satellite towns! Alma Café is in a residential colony just off the main highway: some of the best maintained roads in the NCR and plenty of greenery on the way. The café is in a shopping complex and has high ceilings, a full glass wall that brightens the interiors all through daylight hours and a cheerful buzz with all the indoor plants and shelves full of books to read while you enjoy the food and beverage on offer. So distinctive are the interiors, that it comes as no surprise that one of the promoters is European and has brought a western sensibility to bear. Even the noise level is far from the cacophony that seems to follow one through the city, perhaps owing to the wooden furniture, while the rest of the NCR seems to favour metal, which does not absorb sound, but amplifies it, as do stone floors, the absence of curtains and tablecloths. Here, the decibel level is always bearable, thankfully.
Food:
One of the owners is Polish and here is where you will find the most authentic pierogies in the entire NCR. I am not even sure if pierogies make it to any other menu, to be honest: you could classify it as a dumpling, because the dough and the filling are boiled: a process that is unique to pierogies. We ordered vegetable pierogis (₹495) – a pleasant hearty dumpling shaped like a Cornish pasty. Potatoes would have made the ideal vegetarian-friendly option, as they are also eaten in Poland, albeit with chopped bacon or other meats added. Oven baked pesto chicken (₹675) is a great main course because the pesto is as close to the original Genoese version as anywhere in the NCR and the chickens are farm bred. However, Alma Bakery is about catering to all meal periods and all tastes, whether you are looking for a coffee and a ham and cheese sandwich (₹475) with sourdough bread, grainy mustard, good quality chicken ham, or a tortilla wrap with Chettinad chicken (₹425).
Plus & Minus:
No matter how hungry (or not!) you are, you will surely find something fun and / or filling on this stylish yet down to earth menu.
