Aasmana: The Ritz Carlton, Yerawada, Pune: About

Aasmana is a rooftop lounge at The Ritz Carlton, Pune. It offers panoramic views of the city and the adjoining golf course. This week, I visited Aasmana to celebrate a special occasion with some friends.

Decor:

Housed on the 18th floor, the most impressive feature of Aasmana is the cityscape views it offers. Expansive windows throughout the indoor spaces ensure you get unmatched, panoramic views of the city and the golf course. Make sure you pick a seat close to the window. The indoor space has different themed sections with comfortable lounge-type seating. The colour palette and decor elements change. The decor and furniture are contemporary with a classic touch. There are areas for private dining too. You can step outside, to enjoy a cocktail at the rooftop open-air bar. This section probably has the best views. The fine-dine experience is perfect for after-work drinks, business dinners, or celebratory evenings out with friends and family.

Food:

The elaborate bar and cocktail menu is impressive. You are spoilt for choices and there are a lot of options in wines and spirits to pick from. From the range of different cocktails we tried, my personal favourites were the delicately bold tiramisu martini and the refreshing tamarind margarita. Chef Mayyur Tiwari and chef Gagan Sahu, have put together a pan-Indian food menu which has classic dishes along with modern Indian dishes. The appetizers are split into classic and modern Indian and make sure you try the appetizers from both sections. We started strong with a truffle murg malai. The softest and most tender pieces of chicken breast grilled perfectly and topped with black truffle carpaccio. The umami aroma of the truffles was unmissable from a distance. The 36-hour pickled arbi came next. Arbi chunks marinated with spices and vinegar for 36 hours, deep-fried and tossed with a fragrant and spicy masala. Arbi never tasted like this before, ever. The Chettinad mushroom kakori were okay, but the signature Chettinad flavours were missing. The bajra salad had soaked bajra seeds mixed with hung curd topped with tamarind and mint chutneys and garnished with pomegranate seeds. It was an ode to the chaats of India. Two of my personal favourites, which I have enjoyed on previous visits too, came next. BBQ tamarind lamb chops and rock shrimp Koliwada. The lamb chops were cooked perfectly with a tangy tamarind-based marinade. A dollop of onion tartare on each chop brought the whole dish together. What’s not to love in batter-fried rock shrimp dusted with Guntur chilli powder and served with mint chutney? The shrimp are rightly cooked and the batter is lightly spiced. This one makes for the best accompaniment to the cocktails. After those impressive starters, we kept the mains simple. The delicious and creamy dal Aasmana is their version of the dal makhani which we paired with the ‘khasta’ chur-chur parathas. The signature butter chicken didn’t disappoint and paired perfectly with naan. The guchhi aur akhrot ka pulao was fragrant, delicious and full of Kashmiri morels and walnuts. The dessert section is limited and we ended with the warm and gooey chocolate fudge served with berries and a hazelnut ice cream made in-house.

Plus & Minus: Aasmana: The Ritz Carlton, Yerawada, Pune

The restaurant impresses and lives up to the high standards. The cocktails are innovative, the food is delicious and the decor is beautiful and the city-scape views are unmatched. The service was prompt and the staff was friendly and attentive.
