Located on North Main Road in Koregaon Park, 1441 Pizzeria serves traditional Italian wood-fired pizzas. Along with their range of gourmet pizzas, the place is famous for their ‘make your own pizza’ concept. The brand is interestingly named 1441 as 14 is the longitude and 41 is the latitude of the very first wood-fired pizza place in Naples, Italy.
1441 Pizzeria, Koregaon Park, Pune: Decor
1441 Pizzeria is tucked away in one of the quiet and green lanes off North Main Road in Koregaon Park. The spacious indoor section is well lit and the exposed brick walls create a rustic yet contemporary ambience. There is a glass counter where you can select the ingredients and make your own pizza. The rustic look of the place is further enhanced by the open kitchen and the specially constructed wood-fire oven. The seating is comfortable and wooden red and black chairs are arranged alternately at each table.
1441 Pizzeria, Koregaon Park, Pune: Food
The place offers traditional Italian wood-fired pizzas. According to our server, they source the tomatoes and flour from different parts of Italy and the cheese from Ireland. The menu is curated by the Italian pizza chef Renato Viola and offers a good range of vegetarian and chicken gourmet pizzas. Along with the gourmet pizzas on the menu, you can choose your toppings and create your own pizza.
We started with the jalapeno poppers and roasted potatoes from the special menu. The poppers were crunchy, cheesy and spicy and the roasted potato wedges were grilled with spices. Both these starters were incredibly tasty. We paired our starters with the refreshing lychee and masala lemonades.
The gourmet pizza menu looked extremely tempting and all the toppings and combinations we wanted were available. So we decided to order from the menu instead of making our own pizza. We started with Krish’s pizza which is named after the owner of the pizzeria. This was an 11 inch pizza with probably the best combination of toppings – garlic, basil leaves, jalapenos, caramelized onion, sun-dried tomatoes and smoked mozzarella cheese. The special mama’s sauce was flavorful and the crust was perfectly thin. The wood-fire baking added that smoky flavor and made the base rightly crusty. Along with this stellar vegetarian pizza, we also tried both the chicken options – smoked chicken and BBQ chicken. Our favorite was the BBQ chicken pizza which was topped with barbecued chicken chunks, smoked mozzarella cheese, onions and coriander and was drizzled with a smoky BBQ sauce. Just like the other vegetarian pizza, the base was thin, smoky and crusty.
From the desserts menu, we settled for the chocolate mousse as they had ran out of the tiramisu. The mousse was smooth, rich and perfectly sweet.
Plus & Minus
There are very few restaurants in the city which offer good wood-fired pizzas and 1441 Pizzeria can certainly be counted as one of the best. The staff was courteous and the service was prompt. With only two chicken pizzas as non-vegetarian options, I would have loved to see pork pepperoni and sausages and even prawns as toppings on the pizzas.
