The Old Madras Baking Company: Decor
Flour, sugar and butter may get a bad rap in these times of nutritionism and amongst the obsessively weight watching crowd. But there’s no denying the pleasure – for those who willingly embrace it, of course – of the joy that a warm bun, soft and sweet, or a slice of cake can yield. The Old Madras Baking Company that has arrived in Bengaluru from Chennai serves up those particular pleasures. It’s on New BEL Road.
Food:
I have tasted OMBC’s goodies in Chennai and was happy to order them here. There are some things this bakery does exceptionally well and the Coconut Bun (₹150) is one. It’s large enough to share and stuffed with lots of fresh, sweetened coconut. It’s a truly Indian bake and scrumptious.
The Custard Danish (₹100) also hit the spot for me.
For a light meal order a sandwich here. I tried the grilled Chicken Makhni Sandwich (₹280). It’s large and they are generous with the fillings. The Chicken Quiche (₹110) was, similarly packed with chicken. The pie crust was buttery and short but marred by a perceptible sweetness.
The Bagel with Cream Cheese (₹120) is a good thing to order here. I warmed mine up in the oven and slathered it with the cheese. OMBC also sells an array of breads: Country Loaf, Whole Wheat, Ragi Bread, Nutella Brioche and more. The Rusk (₹80 for 100 g), sugary and crisp is a must-buy. The cakes here are old fashioned in the best way and are perfect for when you can’t handle overwrought confections smothered in ganache. The Victoria Cake, for instance, is all fluffy sponge, jam and cream and you can’t go wrong with that. If you visit the bakery you could wrap up with a very good cup of coffee.
