When Apache first opened in 2001 on Fergusson College Road, it instantly emerged as one of the most happening, pocket-friendly bars in the city. Apache was one of the first bars that served beer on tap, on the table in vertical towers which became a rage among youngsters. Few outlets later, in 2014, Apache High Street opened its doors at Balewadi High Street.

Apache High Street, Baner, Pune: Decor

The outdoor section with its patio style seating is always bustling with college students and youngsters. On some nights, live gigs happen here and the vibe is rather hip. The indoor section is more classic with wooden tables and chairs and leather upholstered sofas by the wall. This section pays homage to The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Abba and other legendary musicians with photos and sketches adorning the open bricked high walls. There is music memorabilia, guitars and posters with quirky quotes suitable for the crowd that frequents Apache. The indoor section also has a bar counter with nicely back-lit open shelves displaying the wide range of spirits they serve.

Apache High Street, Baner, Pune: Food

Youngsters on a tight budget swear by Apache for a VFM experience with friends. The variety of beer served in towers, pitchers and pints is impressive. Apache also serves beertails and classic cocktails. After a round of beer, we tried their classic cocktails – cosmopolitan, pina colada and mojito which were well prepared with the right amount of alcohol. We got the ‘mumfali’ tujhe salam or masala peanuts with our drinks. The currently limited food menu focuses on bar bites, appetizers and flatbreads, things which pair well with beer and alcohol. It also features pastas and mini meal combos. We started with the pub grub staple cheese onion rings which were crunchy and topped with cheese. The pan-Asian starters were delicious, particularly the five spice chicken wings, paneer chilly and the ginger chilli fish. The wings were crispy and tossed with a spicy five spice sauce. The paneer chilli was probably the best dish among the appetizers followed by the ginger chilli fish. The Kung Pao chicken tasted good, but was too heavy on the spice. Flatbreads are the right choice when you are out drinking with friends. The Indian-style chicken tikka flatbread was scrumptious. It was slightly crusty and was topped with cheese and generous chunks of chicken tikka. The peri-peri paneer version was equally good with lots of soft paneer pieces and a spicy peri-peri sauce. Among the mini meal combos, we tried the Singaporean prawn noodles and butter chicken and pulao combo. While the butter chicken tasted good, the prawn noodles were dry and lacked seasoning. We ended our meal with the brownie with ice cream, which was good.

Plus & Minus:

Apache is the perfect place to hang out with friends over beer and drinks and scrumptious appetizers. The beer towers, pitchers and other drinks are total value for money. The bar bites, appetizers and flatbreads were all great. The meal combos we tried were slightly disappointing and the dessert options were limited to the lone brownie with ice cream.
