Most people start small and work upwards. Marut Sikka does things differently. He starts with a splash (as in his now closed restaurant Magique), continues with Kainoosh, then Delhi Club House and finally, (in the spot where Kainoosh used to be) Plate. The concept of this eatery is Indian, Chinese and Thai and western eternal favorites. You will be able to order sandwiches, chilli chicken, Lahore style chicken curry. No fuss, no frills: you eat what you want at any time of the day and pay a modest sum. I was there for about an hour and a half, during which time, I saw that the concept of distancing was followed meticulously by the staff: every other table was left empty. Despite – or perhaps because of – that, customers poured in, attracted by the casual vibe and the menu that was supremely user-friendly. No matter what your tastes, you will find something you will like. While there is little that is retro about Plate, it is undeniable that peri peri pizza, chilli hot dan dan noodles and butter chicken are crowd pleasers that never go out of style.
PLATE, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi: Food
There is something to be said about ordering a plate full of classic chilli chicken (₹545). Oozing spicy sauce and bristling with spring onion juliennes, it takes one back to the good old days when we used to unquestioningly accept this as a bona fide dish from the People’s Republic of China. Thai chilli prawns (₹695) were dipped in a golden batter and fried for optimal crispness. The spicy chilli quotient was in the background, but there is spicy sauce on the table for you to up the ante. All four non-vegetarian dumplings (chicken or prawn) have a textural contrast: my picks would be chicken crystal dumpling (₹495), prawn butter garlic (₹575) and three mushroom dimsum (₹445) from the vegetarian section. For the main course, I had my favourite steamed snapper soy sesame (₹695) that was perfectly cooked. It needs a restrained hand to cook the fish just so and the soy seasoned perfectly. Served with creamy mashed potatoes, it was filling but not heavy. My companion enjoyed her New York chicken burger (₹545) with a substantial chicken patty, bun that did not disintegrate and a pleasant punch of mustard.
PLATE, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi: Plus & Minus
The noise level is considerable on a busy day, but it is one of the few eateries that is wheelchair-friendly.
