Time was when Shiro was a fine dining space and a buzzy nightspot where Bengaluru’s swinging set gathered to knock back mojitos and nibble on expertly crafted sushi.
When the pandemic struck it left the restaurant industry reeling. In a remarkable display of fortitude and resilience many found new ways to stay afloat and relevant to their customers. So, while in pre-Covid times you would never have thought of Shiro as a restaurant from where you could order in, now it’s possible to have the Pan Asian specials from here home delivered.
Shiro, UB City Mall, Vittal Mallya Road, Bangalore: Food
Many restaurants have come up with limited delivery menus as they navigate these challenging times, but Shiro offers an extensive choice. The sushi, sashimi and maki rolls are a specialty here. I love equally the Spicy Tuna Maki (₹640) and the Dyna Maki (₹640) with crunchy tempura prawns, cucumber and Japanese mayo.
Dishes like the Shiitake Tempura Maki (₹635) mean that vegetarians don’t have to forego the pleasure of a delicious maki roll. To feed a crowd, opt for the 16-piece Sushi Platter (₹1,905) which is great value.
There are over a dozen other appetizers to choose from. The Cheese Rolls (₹615), oozing creamy cheese are a real crowdpleaser. Shiro’s Chicken Yakitori (₹545) is one of the best and you simply cannot go wrong with the Seven Spiced Pork Belly (₹960). It’s all gorgeously caramelized meat, buttery fat and aromatic from the complexity of spices.
While the luxurious Miso Black Cod (₹1,570) is listed among the appetizers, I think it makes a flavorful light meal, with the accompanying raw papaya salad offering a nice contrast in texture and flavor.
Main course dishes leave you spoilt for choice. The Fish with Chilli Mustard Sauce (₹755) has a pleasing sweetness to it and combines beautifully with plain steamed rice. I would vouch for the Prawns in Black Bean Sauce (₹870) as well. The Vegetable & Tofu Hotpot (₹530) is a wonderfully satisfying dish for vegetarians – with soft tofu cubes steeped in a richly flavored sauce that acquires its depth from shiitake mushrooms.
When I’m in the mood for a light meal with Japanese flavors I would order the Miso Soup (₹295) with Steamed Japanese White Rice (₹390) and a serving of Prawn Tempura (₹690). For an unfussy one-dish meal, I would always opt for the Hibachi Rice (₹565); its robust, smoky flavours just hit the spot every time.
Hope you’re all staying safe. Order direct from your favourite restaurants like Shiro when you are in the mood for something special.
