Elan: The Lodhi, Lodi Road, New Delhi – Decor

First of all, the location of The Lodhi is on the axis of Lutyen’s Delhi and South Delhi —an unbeatable combination, both for access as well as for cachet. The hotel has not been built on a raised plinth, which means no steps to negotiate for the elderly and for those with reduced mobility. Disclaimer: My late mother was wheelchair-bound for the last year of her life and every outing had to be planned not with cuisine or price, but with accessibility in mind. In that respect, Elan is a winner for ease of access. It is the all-day diner at The Lodhi and overlooks an expansive lawn and has outdoor seating. Currently, smoking is allowed at the outside tables. Because of the menu that caters to all tastes and times of the day (sandwiches and burgers at tea time and so forth) Elan remains busy through-out operating hours, with the peak being lunch and dinner.

Elan: The Lodhi, Lodi Road, New Delhi – Food

When I have to host work acquaintances for lunch, Elan is my default choice. Even when it is full to capacity, you can make yourself heard without raising your voice. Service is by and large attentive, even when the restaurant is full. Herb crusted seabass with ca-per butter sauce (Rs. 2,195) is a personal favourite. Light yet filling and non-messy to eat, my other go-to dish is chicken schnitzel (Rs. 1,545) that is full of flavor and features a pan-fried escallope of chicken. When I want to stick to a hearty salad, I choose the excellent sous-vide mustard chicken salad (Rs. 1,145). Yes, it is light and ideal-ly one would order another course after it, but for a work lunch, I like to take my cues from my dining companion. Work lunches, when you meet strangers and near-strangers, have a very different dynamic from meals with close friends. It is for that reason that I usually avoid lunch with north Indian food: Eating with one’s fingers is messy and the drowsiness that rich food induces makes it best suited for dinner-time! Best of all is the sheer variety of Lucknavi specialties on this menu — one of the under-the-radar gems of our city. Particularly classic is the taar ghosht (Rs. 1,495) best eaten with a man.

Plus & Minus:

Very efficient service that is not in-your-face.
