Dhaatu: The Indian Bistro, Besant Nagar, Chennai: Decor

Dhaatu has a view. One side overlooks the road below, and the other has Eliott’s Beach and the shimmering blue sea in the distance. Grab the corner if you want to watch the sea change colors as the sun moves across the horizon. The décor itself is typical – dark, plain, sensible flooring, easy-to-move furniture, colorful cushions and Indian paintings on the walls.

The Kumkum Sharbat is a deep pink and has swollen sabja seeds floating in it. A welcome drink to combat Chennai’s perennial heat. It could have been a little less sweet, perhaps, but otherwise this has the perfect balance of tang and lime juice and kokum crush.

Dhaatu: The Indian Bistro, Besant Nagar, Chennai: Food

Mild, thin and dark, the Lamb Shorba has lamb pieces hiding at the bottom of the broth. I like the temperature it is served at, enjoying the balance of heat and bite of coarse pepper.

A sizzler platter, emitting steam, sputtering and crackling, is placed on the table. You first eat with your eyes and ears (in this case). It is the Mushroom Charcoal, looking all masala-fied and ready to eat. Stuffed with paneer and bell peppers, it has the typical tandoori masala marination.

Palak Lehsuni Paneer with whole wheat roti is a balanced combination. I like the tiny bits of minced garlic in the creamy green gravy (thanks to the cream added) and the very familiar and welcome aroma of kasuri methi.

For dessert, there’s the slightly grainy Moong Dal Halwa – better than the Desi Ghee Jalebi, whose strands are a tad too thick and soft.

Plus & Minus:

The location is a huge plus for Dhaatu if you don’t mind the side entrance. Sometimes, the lift to the 2nd floor doesn’t work, so be prepared for a short trek up some easy-to-climb stairs.
