Paddy’s Cafe, Kothrud, Pune: Decor
The moment you enter Paddy’s Cafe, the first thing you will notice is the natural elements used to decorate the place. A large tree stands right at the centre of the cafe and is accompanied by a lot of other plants, some potted and some hanging almost forming a canopy. The terracotta, clay and bamboo planters are carefully selected and help in creating an earthy space. The clever use of bamboo throughout the space is practical and at the same time makes the place look contemporary. On each table there are fresh flowers and a glass bottle with woven cane holder. The seating is an eclectic mix of wooden chairs with colorful seating cushions. There are some wooden tables with high-stools which overlooks the tennis and basketball courts of an adjoining sports club.
Paddy’s Cafe, Kothrud, Pune: Food
The menu is well curated and each category features classic and popular dishes. It is great to see equal weight-age given to vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes on the menu. We started with the refreshing strawberry lemonade followed by the Mediterranean bruschettas. The freshly baked and crusty French baguette was topped with bell peppers and crumbled feta. The freshness of the bread was evident as they bake their own bread and the combination of roasted bell peppers and feta worked well. We also tried the scrumptious baked mushrooms. Button mushrooms were filled with a herb and cheese stuffing and baked.
From the pasta section, we tried the pink sauce pasta which is blend of the arrabiata and alfredo sauces. Though not the most authentic dishes, but the pasta was extremely hearty and satisfying. Kudos to the portion size, which could easily be a whole meal. Having ordered their popular BBQ chicken burger many times online previously, I was keen to try it at the restaurant. Chicken stripes are spiced in a special bbq mix and served inside a soft bun with mustard mayo, lettuce and cheese. The burger definitely lived upto my expectations and it is definitely a must-try here. Mushroom lovers can rejoice as you will find a plethora of mushroom dishes. My recommended pick is the porcini pizza which was perfectly thin, crusty and delicious. It is heartening to know that the breads at Paddy’s cafe are baked in-house. It adds a level of freshness and enhances the taste of the burgers, pizzas and sandwiches.
At first glance the menu seems all continental, but there are a few Pan-Asian and Indian dishes on the menu. The typical Thai flavors of fresh basil, turmeric, galangal and lemon grass were spot on in the Thai vegetable green curry which was filled with brocolli, zucchini, egg-plant and bell peppers and served with a bed of steam rice. The chicken makhanwala was served with two lachha parathas. The makhanwala was buttery and mildly spicy and the parathas were delightfully ‘khasta‘.
The dessert menu is impressive with a lot of options. We tried the baked cheesecake, marquis (dark chocolate cake with rum) and the chocolate hazelnut pastry and our unanimous favorite was the smooth and light cheesecake.
Plus & Minus:
The staff was courteous, but the service can be bettered. From our selected order, a few dishes were unavailable which was a bit disappointing. Service was slightly discontinuous and the main course dishes were served with some interval between each dish. But, I am a firm believer of ‘Taste Trumps Everything’. The food served was delicious. Add to that an earthy, contemporary and cozy ambience. Even the music played was very pleasant and added to the vibe. Paddy’s is the perfect place to spend long hours chilling with friends or alone with a book.
