The popularity of Irani Cafes, which for decades served as a meeting point for friends and peers till late night in Hyderabad, is slowly waning. With rapid urbanization and the subsequent rise of real estate value, many have given way to malls and uber chic eateries with fancy setups. Yet, there are a few that stood the test of time and continue to serve menus that pack a punch. Established by proprietor Syed Ali Raza with a clear motto to revive the Iranian cuisine, Lucky Restaurant is definitely one of them.
Lucky Restaurant, Nagole, Hyderabad: Decor
The interiors of the joint are clean and tidy and the ambient lighting is just perfect for a good seating. Spread over three levels, the ground floor of the joint offers a very typical Irani cafe set-up apart from takeaway and a live Irani chai counter. The first and second floor offers a semi-fine dine setup mostly for families with well-spaced tables, comfortable seating and a warm ambience.
Lucky Restaurant, Nagole, Hyderabad: Food
The Irani chai here is a must try. The tea is brewed all through the day in a handi, where the tea leaves are boiled in water on a slow flame to create a strong concoction. Milk is boiled separately with sugar. Unlike regular teas, where milk is added to tea decoction, here, it’s the other way round. As always, the Irani chaiand Osmania biscuit are a major draw here.
Lucky is purely a multi-cuisine restaurant with a special emphasis on Hyderabadi fare. The menu comprises of kebabs, mains and biryanis. We began with mutton seekh and boti kebabs. While the seekh kebabs here are on the spicy side, the boti kebabs are well marinated and will melt in your mouth. We, however, would have liked the meat to be slightly more tender.
From the mains, we first ordered the nalli ki salan — it is a tender lamb shank cooked in chef’s special spices. While the flavor is inviting, the meat falls off the bone; a must try for every meat lover. Their kachi gosht ki biryani is a true classic Hyderabadi biryani with delicious aroma. The moist rice cooked in a perfect mix of different spices with tender meat, tastes just perfect. After all of that, we finished our meal with a delicious bowl of Hyderabadi special qubbani ka meetha.
