Yumma Swami, Camp Area, Pune: Decor
The first thing you will notice when you walk into this eatery is the quirky and fresh vibe. The use of contrasting white and yellow colors for walls and furniture is quite catchy. The walls are adorned with hand painted murals which depict scenes from markets in Kerala, the traditional gopurams of southern Indian temples, and even different gods and goddesses. The quirky vibe continues with an innovative coffee cart which reads ‘Straang Anna’s Filter Kaffe’. The seating is comfortable and spacious on the ground floor. There is a small AC section on the mezzanine floor which can be pre-booked for private get-together.
Yumma Swami, Camp Area, Pune: Food
The menu at Yumma Swami has been meticulously curated by chef Shailendra Kekade and includes the best recipes from the southern states of India. All the batters, chutneys, curries are made fresh everyday and all preparations use desi ghee.
We started our meal with probably one of the best and most popular dishes on the menu, the ghee masala idli. Karnataka’s breakfast staple thatte idli is topped with milagai podi (podi or gun powder) and copious amounts of ghee and served with two chutneys and sambar. The idli was spongy and soft, the podi was rightly spicy and the desi ghee elevated the dish to another level. We accompanied our idli with the refreshingly fragrant kadipatta chhas and a kokum based drink, kolaveri D.The idli definitely set the tone for our meal and we followed it up with another great dish, the Chennai ghee pongal which is an all-time favorite breakfast in Tamil homes. The hearty pongal was soft and runny and filled with curry leaves and peppercorns. Here too the ghee made a lot of difference to the taste. From the diverse dosa section, we went for the popular ghee roast dosa. The taste was great and the ghee was on-point, but we would have preferred the dosa to be thinner and crispier.
Apart from the snacks, the menu interestingly features sabjis and rotis which are made in homes and never feature on restaurant menus. We ordered the akki roti, a hand-rolled flatbread made from rice flour and mixed with dill leaves, carrots and onions along with the moong sabji. The crispy akki roti was delicious and the dill leaves added a unique flavor element. Though we paired it with the moong sabji, we could have eaten it just by itself. We definitely wanted to try the appams and after a lot of deliberation, we ordered the ghee masala appam accompanied with Kerala pepper mushrooms. The taste and flavor of peppers and spices in the mushroom dish was perfect. We were slightly disappointed with the appams as they felt dry and we were hoping them to be soft and spongy.
Pune Camp Area food & Souviners
On a whim, we asked for a bowl of rasam which was absolutely delicious and completely different from the rasam we have ever had before. Make sure you ask for rasam and just have it as a soup.
From the desserts we tried the baked badami mango and yelneer payasam. The mango pudding made from badami mangoes was smooth and rightly sweet. All south Indian meals must end with a strong filter coffee and ours was the perfect end to our meal.
Plus & Minus:
Yumma Swami offers some of the best dishes from the different regions of South India. The menu is diverse and the food along with being delicious is completely value for money. The staff is courteous, but the service seemed discontinuous at times and can definitely be improved.
