ASEAN: On The Edge, MG Road, Bangalore: Decor
This was called On the Edge in its previous avatar and served Asian and Mediterranean cuisine. Now, it’s been rechristened ASEAN and offers dishes from the region. It’s on the 13th floor of Barton Centre, a partially open deck with a view, though not as good as from 13th Floor, the bar, or Ebony.

It’s a vast menu, packed with soups, salads, appetizers, satay and grills, baos, pho, ASEAN steak and risotto, curry bowls, stir fries, rice and noodles with several options under each. I’m aware ‘not enough choice’ is a constant refrain among diners here, but I find over-long menus stressful to navigate.
We began with a Vietnamese Pomelo Salad, cold, crisp, fruity and lovely for a warm afternoon. My companion had the Thom Kha. The soup was light, despite the coconut milk, fragrant and beautifully balanced. This was possibly the best dish of the afternoon for me.
We had quite an array of appetizers. The Super Crunchy Pork Bites did have a crunchy exterior, but were quite dry inside. I liked the Sichuan Salt and Pepper Crunchy Lotus Root, particularly because it wasn’t doused in the overly sweet sauce this dish is normally finished with in most Asian restaurants.
The Wasabi Mushrooms were pleasant enough and should go down well with vegetarians.
I was quite intrigued by the Chiang Mai Risotto. It was packed with the flavors of coriander root, lemongrass and lime, making for a comforting bowl. My companion had the Korean Bulgogi Platter, which was underwhelming.
We were recommended the Penang Nasi Lemak as a house signature. This meal-in-one, though it looked attractive with eggs, fried peanuts, chicken and pickled vegetables surrounding the rice, left me unimpressed. The rice was dry and the chicken rendang didn’t quite make the cut.

You dine with a view here and that’s one of the best parts of the ASEAN experience. Some of the dishes are very good, others not so.
