Good news! Breach Candy got it’s own Thai sidestreet (Soi). It’s perched on the fourth floor and has chef co-owners Seefah and Karan (who wowed with their no-frills erstwhile “The Blue” in Bandra). Bringing themin is celebrity restaurant-nightclub tycoon Rishi Acharya. Soi 69 has already become a celebrity magnet (Ruias, Kapoors, Kapurs, Narangs and so on). So I did a foodie blind date with a celebrity for all seasons and reasons! Gujju housewife, baker, banker, YouTuber, social media influencer and motivational speaker Chef Meghna Kamdar has followed her dream, and reinvented herself through tough times. Honesty, brilliance, down to earth charm and of course a deep knowledge of food — including that of Thai food. Meghna along with husband Sarju, and daughter Kangana who studies in Bangkok are regular BKK visitors.

It sure was an unique inspirational dinner. The food? Seefah Ketchaiyo-Karan Bane magic missing. Went for a second check out. Seefah herself was bustling around. Thankfully! Review follows…

Soi 69, Breach Candy, Mumbai: Decor

Zoom up Breach candy’s restaurant building. Enter into a brightly lit space with comfy seating, soft music and billowing banana fibre lamps. As the night advances, the lights dim and the music gets louder. Packed.

Soi 69, Breach Candy, Mumbai: Food

Translucent, delicate Japanese Yellow tail Hamachi? Plump with flavor, robustly spiced Thai Massaman curry? Or is the Chinese inflected popular Chicken with cashew-nut more your preference? Soi 69’s kitchen aces many of it’s 150 dishes (same menu as Bandra’s The Blue). Sweet and spicy notes do a deft dance in the Papaya Salad at my second meal. These notes were comatose in my first checkout. Norwegian Salmon Cream Cheese Sushi carries the perfect soft heart of avocado.

Crunchy fresh, stirfried mushrooms with ginger spring onions and fat tasty pork on skewers. Silken Green Thai curry and fresh crunchy Summer Rolls are must trys. Black Sesame Toast — plump, luscious and creamy with dollops of black sesame and the Blue Berry Ice-cream is an absolute must try.

Soi 69, Breach Candy, Mumbai: Minus Point

Through both my meals, the dish that is consistently chewy and inedible is the crispy pork dish. Overcooked seabass, delicious fresh Thai herbs sparkle its gravy. Japanese Katsu Curry on rice is lacklustre at our first meal and has a delicious rendering (even though ready made curry powder) at the next. Ditto with the Tomyum Fried Rice, the lemon grass and galangal notes shine through the second time. Consistency needed.

Soi 69, Breach Candy, Mumbai: My Point

It’s a double balancing act. Soi69 deftly seesaws between Thai and Japanese, restaurant and lounge. Having made waves in Bandra the young talented chef couple Seefah and Karan serve up the same 150 dish menu here. Of course, prices are understandably higher (location and ambiance).

My two checkout dinners reveal a range of dishes, flavors and textures that eliminate any doubt that Soi 69 has ample skill. It just doesn’t have nearly as much discipline and consistency and as long as Seefah Bane keeps a tight monitor, Soi 69 will continue to rock! Of course, owner Rishi Acharya ensures that the restaurant suits all ages, and transforms itself later into the night with loungey, bar vibe. Once again he has SOBO dancing to his tune!
