Chakum Chukum has grown from the hole-in-the-wall operation it was to occupy a larger space on 80 Feet Road, Indiranagar. It now has the cheery tones and the efficient look of any quick service restaurant.

This is the small food business that brought some of the best rolls to town, winning fans who didn’t mind waiting in queue for their Double Chicken Egg Roll to be whipped up. Chakum Chukum’s list of dishes has expanded in recent times and now includes snacks, kebabs and even curries and biryani as weekend specials. I decided on a roll-and biryani meal the other day and began with a Lasooni Murgh Roll, which is one of the new additions to the menu. The paratha was warm and flaky, and the Chicken Tikka nicely done. We also ordered a Veg Seekh Roll, which was a tad spicy for my taste. While these two orders were perfectly nice, I couldn’t help thinking they weren’t quite the toothsome pleasures the rolls at the original outlet and in the past had been. Hard to pin down, something has been lost in the transition. I also tasted the Kolkata-style biryani, which is available during the weekend. It was pleasantly non greasy and, besides the chicken portions, had the egg and whole potato, which are standard additions in the Kolkata biryani. I did, though, find the aromatics somewhat overpowering in this otherwise tasty dish. It came with a freshly-tasting raita.

You get quick service at Chakum Chukum. And if you order or take away, it’s all nicely packaged – the rolls in oblong paper boxes with little sachets of green chutney. Having said that, kaathi rolls are best eaten as soon as they are made and at the outlet.
