The European, Ambavadi, Ahmedabad: Decor
The European is located on the first floor of a building with large glass windows visible from the main road. A motif of snow clad peaks on the glass door marks the entrance, while the interiors are minimalistic with white as the signature colour. A special feature of the restaurant is the open to view kitchen where customers can watch the chefs and kitchen team at work from the tables.
The European, Ambavadi, Ahmedabad: Food
I ordered the lamb pot pies, a plate with pot shaped pies that fitted easily in my palm with a crust that was strong enough to hold the meat encased inside. I bit into it to get at the casserole of minced mutton, carrot and peas which was tasty comforting food at its best. The chicken pot pies have creamy chicken, leeks and a glaze of mash potatoes, laced with mustard. Another cozy dish is the Sicilian trio of Arancini, crispy rice balls with mushroom, goat cheese, caramalised lemon and candied pea, spiced with mint, the French polenta torte and German potato pancakes are other vegetarian dishes. The Greek style slow-cooked shoulder of lamb, however, I felt would have had a nicer texture and consistency with fresher lamb/goat meat than was used.
I ordered two plates squid dishes – the Spanish salt and pepper calamari and the Greek marinated calamari with lemon. I was pleasantly surprised to get soft but firm golden brown calamari rings with a slightly silky texture (not the overcooked rubbery calamari served in many restaurants). Both marinades went well with the seafood.
The pizzas have delightful stone baked crusts, and you can choose from toppings like German potato, Portuguese eggplant, Turkish hummus, or for non-vegetarians German bacon, Spanish chorizo, Hungarian chicken, Sicilian fish and Portuguese peri peri chicken. Italian marinara is for seafood buffs as it has prawns, squid and fish. The risotto was excellent in consistency of the cooked rice but the prawns were a bit hard. This is one of the few restaurants in Ahmedabad that serves paella. The pastas are handmade – try the ravioli dishes.
I ended with the Turkish rose pannacotta which was silky smooth and firm without the overdose of gelatin that often makes it wobbly, and vanilla brulee tart which also had smooth custard below the burnt sugar crust. Both desserts were delicate and not overly sweet. The coffees here are also pretty good.
The European, Ambavadi, Ahmedabad: Plus & Minus
Those who like food of the Western world finally have a reliable restaurant to go to for European Continental, Mediterranean and Australasian style dishes. This restaurant is still new and they will hopefully improve the consistency of their lamb / goat and prawns supplies in the near future. Do not miss having their delicate desserts.
