The Fat Labrador Cafe is a new addition to Bavdhan’s fast growing food scene. The cafe is the brainchild of Smita Murthy and Aniket Naik and this pet-friendly cafe gets its quirky name from Smita’s fat pet Labrador named Cookie.
The Fat Labrador Cafe, Bavdhan, Pune: Decor
From the outside, this looks like any other cafe but signage and the logo with the dog stands out. When you enter what catches the eye is the turquoise blue wall adorned with old and new photos of people with their pets. They have used a lot of wooden elements in the decor accompanied by many potted plants. This gives a very cozy vibe and you can easily spend a few hours here enjoying the rains and sipping coffee.
The Fat Labrador Cafe, Bavdhan, Pune: Food
The food menu is short and features sandwiches, toasties, French toasts and omelettes. Being a true bruschetta fan, I went straight for the open toasties which had fresh ingredients served on warm and crusty baguette. The tomato and feta cheese toastie was fresh and drizzled with the perfect amount of olive oil, the pesto, sun-dried tomato and cream cheese was delicious with freshly made pesto and creamy cheese and the conventional cheese chili toast with peppers, green chilies and melted cheese was scrumptious with the soft melting cheese and a kick coming from the chilies. If you are a sandwich lover, go for the cajun chicken sandwich which is served as a brown bread sandwich stuffed with cajun spiced chicken chunks, grilled to perfection and accompanied by crisps. Among the omelettes, I tried the spinach omelette which was fluffy and stuffed with creamy spinach and serve alongside peppered potatoes and toasted brown bread. They also have some sweet treats which are not on the menu and change daily. I tried the bite-sized lemon tarts which had a buttery short pastry filled with a zesty lemon curd and a freshly baked blueberry muffin.
The food menu complements the beverage menu which includes some exquisite coffee and tea options. I highly recommend the Vietnamese styled iced coffee. They serve it with drip filter where the freshly brewed hot espresso drips on to a layer of sweet condensed milk and once mixed, it is poured over a glass full of ice cubes. Their South Indian filter kaapi is something which you can have over and over again.
The Fat Labrador Cafe, Bavdhan, Pune: Plus & Minus
Just about a month old, The Fat Labrador Cafe serves great coffee along with some scrumptious snacks. Their menu is still evolving and will only improve as time passes. I personally would like if they served their sandwiches and toasties with chips or wedges instead of crisps.
