Szechwan Court – The Oberoi, MG Road, Bangalore: Decor

Szechwan Court at The Oberoi has reopened after a hiatus and that warranted a visit. There’s a new chef at the helm and a new menu. It continues to remain the sedately stylish restaurant it has always been, with a muted colour palette and a quiet hush about it. Some tables offer views of The Oberoi’s carefully tended verdancy and water features.

Szechwan Court – The Oberoi, MG Road, Bangalore: Food

Chef David Wang’s menu includes a list of his recommendations, besides Chinese restaurant staples. I went for lunch and was served a tasting menu comprising the chef’s favorites. For appetizers there was Crackling Baby Spinach, which lived up to its name and Crisp Eggplant topped with fried noodle shreds — a delicious starter for vegetarians.

The star dish for me was the Peking Duck Rolls, the meat carved by the chef table-side and served in soft pancakes with a smear of hoisin sauce. If you are a fan of Peking Duck, you should indulge in the full duck meal here, starting with rolls, then duck soup — which I enjoyed — and wrapping it up with stir-fried duck meat with accompaniments. My main course dishes were Kung Pao Chicken, that old favorite scattered with cashew-nuts, and Prawns in XO Sauce, with Spicy Seafood Rice.

Dessert choices at Chinese restaurants are usually limited to honey noodles and toffee bananas. That’s there on the menu here too, but The Oberoi pastry chefs also serve a Raspberry Matcha mousse, a lovely balance of tea and fruit flavors, and a dessert simply called Cocoa 68 %, a luscious stack of citrus ganache, bitter chocolate and nut financier. My dessert platter also held Black Sesame and Cherry Cheesecake, which paled in comparison to the other confections.

I dined here on another occasion and ordered from the a la carte menu. The Salt and Pepper Prawns were superb and the Crisp Lotus Stem was good, too. We also ate Woktossed Tenderloin with Water Spinach with some steamed rice and stir-fried greens, which made for a comforting meal with clean, pleasing flavors. My only disappointment was the Crab-meat with Onion Soup which had in it shredded crab-stick — an ingredient I wouldn’t expect in this particular kitchen.

Szechwan Court – The Oberoi, MG Road, Bangalore: Plus & Minus

I had two enjoyable meals here, eating familiar favorites. I did, though, expect some more inventiveness in this new menu.
