What do my long-time favorite suburban ‘Highway Gomantak’ and the brand new SoBo ‘Plate & Pint’ have in common? Nothing, except the fact that both are family run and the family is always in the kitchen and front of the house too. I love that. Happily in this six-month-old Warden Road’s ‘Plate and Pint’, 23-year-old Monaz Irani bakes and bustles around. Having completed her hospitality training, she studied bakery in Le Cordon Bleu London and returned to work with Persis, her talented mother. I got to know of this, just by chance, all thanks to my lunch with three vibrant eighteen-year-olds poised to enter college. I not only enjoy their bubbly energy, the music they rock to (which is being played here) but also the comfort food they trip out on. “This is our regular hang out”, says Sahaj Parekh all set to become as brilliant a CA as his father Bimal Parekh. Charmers Sanya Gandhi and Keahn Divecha are all friends and live in the vicinity. Our review follows.
Plate & Pint, Kemps Corner, Mumbai: Decor
Charming surprise! Go past the long, brightly lit, wood paneled corridor into alcovelike rooms. Bakery counter, high table and chairs, booths, black and white floor, huge TV screen, large glass windows with green foliage complete the decor.
Plate & Pint, Kemps Corner, Mumbai: Food
Comfort food. Plenty for vegetarians. For starters, go for the trio of hummus (Pickled beetroot, roasted pumpkin, za’atar), moist Mushroom Focaccia made more tasty with goat cheese. Must-trys: Thincrust Margherita Pizza sparkled with truffle oil, dense with flavour Chicken White Wine Risotto, Chicken roasted with red wine jus. Breakfast through the day is always a great option. Go for the velvety Crème Brûlée crowned with a sugar cage, Kahluainfused creamy Tiramisu. I also buy off the counter, gluten-free Dark Chocolate Brownie (yum!), lamb puff (huge, flakey and yum).
Plate & Pint, Kemps Corner, Mumbai: Minus Points
The menu needs more pizzazz. Some of the dishes need fine-tuning. Zucchini wrapped cottage cheese, more jalapeno in the Jalapeno Cheese Poppers needed, over-fried Falafel and Peri Peri Calamari Rings. Valet parking only 11 am onwards.
Plate & Pint, Kemps Corner, Mumbai: My Point
Plate & Pint fills the gap of casual, open through the day eateries in this part of South Mumbai. Pizza, pasta, breakfast through the day fare. Monaz Irani informs that very soon she is planning to introduce plenty of vegan, gluten-free fare, smoothie bowls, tofu and more. How about Parsi dishes, too? Plate & Pint & Parsi? Meanwhile, if in the vicinity, go to this cheerful, charming, neighborhood cafe bar for fun dining. Not fine dining. It’s comfort food. Comforting prices.
