Mamagoto has finally opened its first outlet in the city. After scouting for the perfect location for over two years, the pan-Asian restaurant has finally found the spot at The Pavilion mall on SB Road.

Mamagoto, Shivaji Nagar, Pune: Decor

A playful setup, the decor is kitschy, loud and pretty much in-your-face. The walls are plastered with Japanese pop artwork, the seats are comfortable and the music is usually down tempo beats. Overall, a great spot to head to for a fun, casual meal with friends and / or family.

Mamagoto, Shivaji Nagar, Pune: Food

Mamagoto translates to “play with your food” and there are dishes that are in tandem with that motto. Like the Thai Puchka Bite. Served on a bed of toasted coconut, each puri is stuffed with betel leaf, onions and peanuts and is to be had with the ginger sauce and chillies served on the side. It’s recommended you add some chilli to up the heat a few notches. If had just with the sweet ginger sauce, it does feel like a fun spin on meetha paan.

The Vegetable Basil Cups, another DIY dish, on the other hand, packs a punch.

Chopped vegetables liberally seasoned with crushed pepper, served with crisp cups of lettuce. If you’re looking for appetizers that can be shared order the 10-piece dumpling platter with five different dim sums. Barring the slightly thick wrapper, most of the dim sums in the steamer were good, but the Veg Chive and Pomegranate Dumpling shone the brightest. They also have a decent 12-piece Maki Platter with three different types of roll. The uramaki rolls (rice on the outside) with options like Chicken Katsudon (fried strips of chicken), Ebi (prawn) Tempura and California roll, drizzled with a wasabi sauce.

The mains are usually made up of one bowl meals, all ideal for sharing. Some stellar options include the Smoky BBQ Pork Belly Bowl – skewers of pork belly grilled on a robata grill served with a sticky fried rice and Mama’s Spicy Ramen Bowl. The desserts are pretty great as well, especially the Mama’s Banana Split, panko-crusted fried bananas with salted peanut bits, chocolate drizzle and a stunning Coconut and Palm Sugar ice cream. The seasonal Sticky Rice with Mango with pieces of Alphonso mangoes, though delicious, was marred by the rather dry rice.

Plus and Minus:

Definitely a good option in the city for Pan Asian cuisine aficionados. While some dishes won’t blow your mind away, most of them are comforting and fail-safe.
