Eden, Nungambakkam, Chennai: DECOR
Everybody knows Eden Vegetarian, the restaurant that has been around for more than 25 years.
Colorful walls, attractive ceiling lights and brightness make this a place kitty party ladies love. As is with most restaurants, this one, too, has a majority of lady diners during lunch. One cluster of tables has a lively tombola game is in progress.
I like the light wooden furniture and the sky-blue-textured upholstery, which looks like a cross between jute and raw silk, but has, in truth, a mix of synthetic material.
Eden, Nungambakkam, Chennai: FOOD
They own a sugarcane machine, and I get some fresh sugarcane mint ginger juice right at my table. It is hygienically made, sweet, has the perfect colour, taste and freshness. My afternoon has begun.
In the past, I’ve loved Eden’s chilly cheese toast, and have fond memories of those paper-thin triangles, topped with browning bubbles of cheese and little green pieces of chilli peeping through adding their aroma and bite… happily, it has remained the same.
Stuffed with minced onions, garlic and mushroom, the stuffed mushrooms are batter coated and deep-fried to a crisp. The garlic sauce adds extra zing and flavor. FYI, all sauces, dips and mayonnaise are made on the premises, by the restaurant’s chefs.
I know more kuzhambu and I know idli, but, will the two work together as more kuzhambu idli? Not in my bowl, I find. The kuzhambu is too thick to permeate the mini idlis, and it is neither here nor there.
I move to the know suey, making my bowl nice and slurpy, adding generous portions of the coconut milk gravy, flavored with galangal, lemongrass, chillies, garlic, onion, ginger and veggies. To this, I add slivers of fried garlic, salad and peanut crumble. Mixing it all up, I totally enjoy the medley of flavors and textures that come together in my mouth.
Dessert simply must be the mango cheese cake. It is a sight to behold. A large white and yellow triangle topped with mango puree and agar-agar. The cheesecake part is perfectly sweetened hung curd, cream and pieces of mango.
