Banh Mi & Wok opens right on to bustling 100 Feet Road in Indiranagar. It has an airy, outdoor feel and aims for a cheap-and-cheerful style. There are chairs painted in bright colors and a large table suited to communal dining in the centre. It’s self-service here and there are cool touch screens on which you can order.

This may make it appear like a neighborhood quick-service restaurant. In fact, Banh Mi & Wok serves up the sort of food you’d expect in a stylish restaurant with full service and at far higher prices. This restaurant is the enterprise of Chef Arup Kakati, who spent many years at a five-star hotel in Bengaluru. Now, he’s exchanged his white chef coat and the starched linen formality of a five star, for a venture that, despite the absence of frills, still delivers food so good you’ll want to keep going back for more. It’s Pan Asian and you have a choice of Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Indonesian dishes.

The food comes in paper containers, thoughtfully crafted from lead-free material. I began with the Mixed Mushroom Glass Noodle Salad from the Small Plates selection. The slithery noodles were coated in a tangy dressing and it was chock full of shiitake and wood ear mushrooms and white fungus. The Stir Fry Tempura Chilli Prawns, made with fresh, not frozen seafood, and fried just right were fabulous and a steal at ₹250 for a plate of six plump prawns. The Sweet Chilli Lotus Stem is guaranteed to win over vegetarians.

The Baos are one of the hot-sellers here and are warm, fluffy things with fillings ranging from Five Spice Fried Chicken to Stir Fry Tempura Vegetable and Ground Lamb with Red Curry Paste. For a meal-in-one, there are the stir fries and curries. I enjoyed the chicken in Sambal sauce, served in a box with noodles. The Tofu in Black Bean Sauce, which I had with rice, was also spectacular.

Dessert is soothing Tab Tim Grob and delicious Fried Banana with ice cream which is a perfect way to end a meal at Banh Mi & Wok. It’s a meal that you wouldn’t have expected in so unpretentious a setting.

The order-taking and billing proceed smoothly and Chef Arup and his partner at BM & W, Salamath, are always at hand to attend to customers.
